So, in your experience, if a shop says 'seniors discount', will they take this card or will they expect it to be the government one?

While travelling with sis & bil in Oct/Nov they were getting Seniors discount at many places where they wouldn't give me a Pensioner discount. I thought this was unfair, as I'm on a DSP, but someone pointed out that my card doesn't say DSP, it says Pension Concession Card, a card which is used by anyone on a Centrelink payment. Of course I get many other discounts that my sis & bil don't get, like public transport, prescriptions etc, so I guess I'm still ahead, but I'd like to get as many discounts as possible top help my budget!

I'm not 60 for another 18 months, so I'm not entitled to the Government Seniors card, but it's been suggested that I should join National Seniors. It costs $35 a year, so I'm wondering if it's worth joining? Does it get you the discounts that the regular seniors card gives you?

National Seniors when I was a member got discounts from organisations that were linked to them but no where near the discounts available through the normal seniors card, I have a aged pension card but often get discounts on seniors card that I cannot get on pension card.

When in Townsville last year we took our Tug across to magnetic Island no discount for centrelink card but discount with my seniors card , I ask the lady why they didn't take centrelink card she said lots of people on centrelink cards so they only give discount to seniors , Went shopping over xmas and ask at a shoe shop do they give seniors discountthey said yes and on a $320 sale I received $48 discount pays to ask

I used to belong to National Seniors, but gave it away a few years ago. Couldn't justify the yearly fee.
I have the normal Seniors card, really good discounts and in many places.

Thanks folk for the info. I've had a concession card for about a year and thought it covered me for seniors too. Live and learn! I've pulled my old seniors card out of the drawer and put it back into my wallet.

In NZ the 'pension' card is just for seniors. Everyone else gets a 'benefit' card - sickness etc. Finally worked that out when I had the 'pension' card reject for a 'seniors card' discount. I do have a seniors card as well - am learning also:)

Beth in Queensland you can get a Go card / senior card combined , which is handy when traveling on public transport has you have proof you are a concession fare . Paper tickets are far to expensive , Even if you don't travel on public transport very often can save you a lot of money

 Typical dumb Queensland! In NSW we know much better than let a a good common sense idea like that to ever occur! Our Guvmints are way too smart for that!

"NSW bureaucracy" and "common sense" are mutually exclusive.

I have a gocard Brickies, of the concession kind. I didn't know there was a seniors one as well.

I'm not fond of the buses but I do use it to go the RBH for appointments. I don't mind driving over there, but I don't like paying the parking fees if I get held up at my appt. When I was really crook several years ago, there was no way I could get a bus, so often had to pay a big fee.

I've had ocassion to go to Ipswich Hospital a couple of times for my daughter, and they're fees are much much cheaper than RBH. And as you come from Ippy brickies you may know,,,they have a great system of payment too. 'It' takes a photo of your rego number on the way in, then when you're ready to leave you go to the machine at the end of the walkover, enter your rego number, pay, and as you drive out it 'sees' you've paid and opens the gate. Very easy. No ticket to lose.

Even McDonalds will give 10% on presentation of the Seniors Card. I use it often when taking the grand kids for a treat. I've had many other Seniors then show theirs, after seeing me show mine, and invariably say they had no idea they could get Discount..$2.50 discount on say $25 bill is really handy.....I simply hand it with the cash and McDonalds do not make a big deal out of it..just do the discount..all very discreet...go for it...Hoo Roo

Thank you Goldie, but do they take National Seniors cards as well as the regular Government Seniors card at these places? Is it worth me paying $35 a year for National Seniors membership? That was my original query.

I got my seniors+go card a couple of months back. I got $145 discount on my car rego. Yesterday I bought a $339 freezer from "The Good Guys". $10 discount for cash, or $40 discount for seniors card. I always use the train when I go to Brisbane, just got to find out how to use the go part of it. I wonder how many people don't bother to apply for it.

Yes Pete handy card all round, One day this week I didn't have my seniors card + Go card on me, the trip on the train cost $3.40 for concession zone 1 to 3 with paper ticket , Same trip with Go card $1.87 make a big difference

When we went to see a film we said two pensioners tickets please , the young lad said you mean seniors yes we said what is the difference he told us always say seniors and lots of folks on a pension. some places we dont even have to show our seniors card I ask every one now do we get a senior discount, I f you don't ask you don't get it
