grey nomading in Us

We used Auto DriveAway  for cars.  That is we delivered cars all over the USA  specifying where we would like to go to.    They have a car that needs to go to a place near your destination you take it.   As long as your "Very" flexible it is a cheap way of travelling. Well it was back then anyway.

Like Los Angeles to Baltimore and 10 days to get it there.   They would give you a route to travel as well.

I was just looking at some vans and motorhomes to help my dream of traveling across the US in a compervan or motorhome. Has anybody done it? I don,t need much, something with a reliable motor and perhaps a tiolet and shower.Your views will be apreciated. Also, I discovered a mob called "the escapees club", which seems much like the grey nomads. Thanks, Bill

Just from looking at for sale ads when I was there 2 years ago, older motor homes are very cheap and many had very low mileages, but I believe that there are problems re rego and insurance if you don't have a residential address in the states, I looked at the cost of renting a small motorhome for a period of 8 weeks in the shoulder season and the cost was prohibitive, also most were petrol v8's so the fuel cost would have been quite high, much cheaper to rent a car and stay in motels, the cost for the car for 8 weeks was $2200 and most motels were $60 to $70 a night with breakfast included and the quality of the rooms was excellant had just on lousy room in the whole trip.

We used Trip Advisor reviews when looking for accomodation and just booked one night ahead,we travelled on the West Coast visiting many National Parks Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Yellowstone, Glacier  on the way up to Canada then across the Rockey Mountains to Vancouver and came back down the coast to Los angeles, travelled 11000miles in the 8 weeks.

Would love to go again for a longer period and buy a second hand MH and even if it was abandoned at the end of our travels would probably be much cheaper than renting.

Cheers

David

What sort of vehicle do your friends in the US have. Mine may be a bit slow and old for them.Get them to contact me, if possible.I also have a house on Magnetic island, which might help. Thanks, Bill

We did this in 1988 hired a small motorhome.  Think it was a Toyota Ute with the Custom Built Van on the Chassis. Slept 4,  Kitchen, Shower, Toilet.

We had a great time Travelling California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, in it.   Cost about $1500 for a month I think back then.   All to fast of course.

Then used a regular car for travelling the rest of the USA staying in cheap Motels ans NP, KOA's. (Kamps of America) for about six months

The USA is a wonderfull place to travel and lots to see and do.  The people (like in most Countries) were very hospitable. Especially the West. They pride themselves on "Western Hospitality"   But we loved the whole place  and Canada.

Look foreward to see how you go.
