Here is my slide on/ ute. Its a 97 Ford courier diesel 4wd with a modified freeway camper. It has a wood frame , so I added some steel reinforcement and now its a lot better.More engine power would be apreciated.Bill
Actually ,its not. i have Ironman loadplus override springs on the back and its quite stable. A lower tray would be a great help in loading and unloading, but its not that bad. I have done Fraser island , and the Bloomfield track in it , so it seems to be ok.I went close to buying a bt50 2wd ute, but you loose the 4wd system, so I will keep the Courier. You can,t go very quick with the power availiable, so I take my time, and its reliable as the day is long, and easy to fix. See you on the track, Bill.
G'day Bill. I have a similar rig, an old Freeway and a '94 Courier flat bed ute. When I read your first post with pics of the rig, I wanted to ask you about the truck's suspension. Has it been modified? You said the trip home (after buying it) was "a breeze". Is the weight of the camper a problem for the Courier springs? How was the handlling on corners? I also have tie downs like yours (turnbuckles) and was wondering if they hold the camper steady on the tray. No lateral sliding or movement? As to being top heavy, as another forum member suggested, mine has two storage boxes on either side of the floor area, plus an extra full-width storage box underneath which makes it about a foot taller than yours. I figure it should be okay provided all the heavy stuff is loaded below the waistline. The reason I'm asking these questions is because I haven't put the camper on the ute yet. Still getting a few things done to the ute. Gary
G'day Bill. Tried to reply earlier but must've done something wrong. I'm a newbie. Anyway, you've answered my question about whether or not your suspension is standard. I have the same rig as yours... old Freeway camper and Courier ute, except my Courier is 2WD and petrol. I was thinking about installing Polyair Springs (bellows) but other people recommend helper springs similar to what you have. But what about sway? Do you have any problems in that regard? I also see that your turnbuckles are the same as I have. Is there any particular technique you use with those? Or do you just attach them to the bar below and leave it at that? Gary
