Albury to Hervey Bay Inland?

Hi all just after some advice from those that have travelled this route recently will be leaving Albury to travel to Hervey Bay on the the 3 Jan 13 via the Newell was planning to stop first night at Mendooran Map 443 then on to Yarralong weir map 726  then onto Hervey Bay we have no time limit.

My questions are

:1 Is Mendooran Rd suitable for a 8 mtr van from Dubbo end thru to Warkton end  or should i pick the Newell back up from the Castlereagh Hyw

:2 Does any one have any better suggestions for overnight stays along the way.We are trying to stay off the coast road due to School holidays and all the road works that are apparently happening .

Thankyou in advance

Merry Christmas to all and a safe and happy new year

Cheers

Mick

Mendooran is a fair hike even if you go via Mendooran rd (not to bad a road) or the better way would be through Gilgandra.
Mendooran is a big open area that would get bloody hot that time of year. The cost of fuel would probably get you a night in a caravan park
A place I would consider is Binnaway, about 30 k from Coonabarbran.
it is free but power is available at $2 for 3 hours and a nice hot shower is $2.

Mate, Dubbo to Mendooran through to Newcastle is a breeze towing a van, even one as long as yours. Mine is almost 7m internal & gave no problem from Gulgong, Dunedoo, Mendooran, Dubbo & return last week. The trick though, from the Dubbo end head up the Newell to Brocklehurst then turn right for Mendooran rather than taking Old Mendooran Road off the Golden Highway. However, why not turn left at Brocklehurst travel 4km & spend the night at Terramungamine Reserve. Lovely spot.

Hi!  Mick,

A  few  camps along the way from Goondiwindi North.

1.     Head for Millmerran Gore Highway.   Camping at The Water Tower on the western edge of town.

        27 52 36   151 15 32.

2.     Head for Cecil Plains north from Millmerran.  Camping at The River Lyons Park

        27 31 57    151 12 17

3.      North again to Dalby and then take The Bunya Highway to Bell.  O/N stop in Kumbia.

        26 41 33  151 39 10

4.      Stuart River, Bunya Highway, just South of Kingaroy.

         26 36 41     151 47 00.

5.      Another very good camp, Lake Broadwter, S.West of Dalby, Good swimming, Hot Showers, Lots of space.

         Best mid week.  Fees apply.

         27 21 12   151 05 34.

Suggest you stay off the Leichardt Highway north from the Gore Junction,

and The Moonie Highway From Moonie to Dalby. Has been a bit up and down.

All on Google Earth for you to check.

Anything else give I may be able to advise.

         Haji-Baba

I have to agree with Haji-Baba. Its the way I go all the time. After Kingaroy go through to Ban Ban Springs turn right and onto Biggenden. Through Biggenden to Childers, turn south on the Bruce until you come to the turnoff for Hervey Bay.
There is another way from Biggenden but my son says it takes a little longer. Turn right in the middle of Biggenden and head for Maryborough, nice country road which crosses the Bruce, once in Maryborough turn left towards Hervey Bay.
By the way Welcome to the forum.

Another possibility, after Kingaroy go thru Murgon, Kilkivan, Woolooga Then to Bruce Hwy at Bauple then to Maryborough.  Haven't been that way for a while but I think the road is good and about 50/60 odd k's shorter than thru Biggenden.  Just a thought.

Cheers,

Jack

Yes, stick with Jack Mac, probably the shortest route to the Bay from Dalby.  Most of the roads from Goondi. should be ok.

By heading North from Millmerran to Cecil Plains, Dalby and Kingaroy you will dodge a lot of heavy trucks. .

Or at least some of them.    And a good drive

Suggest you avoid the Leichardt and the Moonie Highways as they are normally a bit lumpy.

A very good butcher shop in Bell on the right, just go in and with a straight face ask for 3 sausages and two rashers of bacon.

See how the butcher reacts.  He will know who sent you.

Have fun Haji-Baba
