I have the ball on top of a telescopic thingy, which worked well for the little camper, but there's nowhere to sit it on the caravan hitch.
I know the subject has come up on here before but I can't find the info I want by the 'search' button.
Keeping in mind that I need to do this as cheaply as possible.
I've done a little research on ebay, where I read that the CCD type has a clearer picture, and I think I'd want one with a larger than 4.3 screen. Some are mounted on the licence plate, and some look quite bulky and where would they be mounted? Also I don't think the 'fish eye' one would be appropriate, would you agree?
I haven't put this in the techy corner because it usually gets a little too technical for me.
Beth, I have a CCD camera purchased because of the cleraer picture and its great in the low light of the morning and evening as well, unfortunately the picture quality is controlled only via a remote which is not always handy. My Camera cost around $220, 5 years ago believe they are a lot cheaper now. The other type Cmos/ are very cheap.
I like the monitor that clips over the revision mirror as per http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-18-IR-Wireless-Reversing-Camera-7-LCD-Monitor-Mirror-Car-Rear-View-Kit-/251198620778?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7c9ac46a
It does not seem any different then from the revision mirror.
My unit is wired in. I understand with the wireless system you still need battery to the camer ie + and neg. so for a better signal ( some wireless units can be impacted by out of tune vehicles) another 2 signal wires from the camera to the monitor to me is a better way to go.
Thanks Peter. I was wondering about the wireless bit, or whether to have it wired in. I probably have enough gadgets that need batteries anyway. My son could wire it through for me.
When you say it clips over the regular mirror, does it then take the place of the regular mirror, and is it on all the time?
I have a useless wireless one on the number plate. Picture very erratic and needs good light. So - found another system - 2 aerials with a plastic cup on the bottom of each with putty like stuff in them. Stick one on the tow ball, one on the caravan socket. Then line them up - once far enough back the van one will knock the ball one off and you know you are in the right place. Cost me $10 at Auski roadhouse in WA. No idea where else you get them. Otherwise the best backing assistant is another person - usually find them nearby and most willing to help:)
The styrophome bright yellow ball was a similar thing, but it had a magnet on the bottom. The magnet doesn't sit properly on this hitch, keeps falling off before I get there.
This cup idea looks interesting though. Certainly be cheaper than buying the camera.
I prefer not to unhitch at all. Just leave everything else hooked up and wind the jockey wheel up to get the right level. I had sis&bil wtih me on my recent trip, so wasn't a problem until we seperated for the last leg. A bloke nearby offered to guide me at the last CP. That made it so much easier.
But there may not always be someone around, so I'd like to have a backup system. Pun unintended but funny.
Wireless Rear View was on display and operating on the counter and camera aimed at the door.
Struth, what a fright to see myself....very clear picture etc, but wasn't mounted in a vehicle, but did ask the question regards interference and clarity.
Not a problem.
Price $149.00
Can add and extra camera on back of van which will run via the wireless and same good vision, but was an extra ???? $40.00 I think.
Am thinking seriously with a purchase as a hard wired unit to a new interior rear view mirror started at $490.00.
For now I use one of those marriage saver thingies. A metal V that sits over the tow ball, just line up the car and reverse slowly, the V slides the ball into position.
Saves damaging the rear of the car.
I had a severe worry about unhitching my little caravan on my own before, but now I am a confident hitcher up er.

Geez you guys are scaring me off having a camera! Sounds very complicated. And I don't think one could be mounted on the roof of my little Lucy without making a mess of the duco. Although, with all her hail damage, maybe that doesn't seem so important.
Thanks Ole Grizzly and all of you with your great suggestions, as usual.
I've looked at that V thingy before, and I've also seen this mirror on a periscope. I'll see if I can upload these pictures I found.
No, as usual they won't upload for me. So I'll try this way.
http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-how-to/trailer-tech/hitching-made-easy/ This is the one I already have..the yellow ball type which has magnets on the base. But my hitch is different to this so it doens't sit as well. I also notice on this site that there is a variety of gadgets including the V hitch or E-Z hitch as they call it.

We have a camera on the back of our van which is on all the time and is located up near the roof to minimise spray from wet roads which does effect cameras that are mounted down low, mine does get spray but only when occasionally. I originally fitted a 120 degree camera but depth of field was poor so changed to a Sony 90 degree camera which gives better depth of field, ours is hard wired with a small hole in outer wall and waterproofed with marine sealant into cupboard and down through floor and into flexible electricians condute and strapped to the chassis along to the front of the van for connection to the tug which can be done with an RCA or Anderson plug.
Our screen is a Viscom brand and supports two cameras and has good adjustment menu for optimum picture with a five inch screen, which is ideal I am going to wire in the other 120 degree camera on the back of the tug to make hitching up divorce free, it is important that you buy shielded cable for the run from camera to screen as this prevents interference and is quite cheap at jaycar. I did considerable research prior to buying my unit which cost around $200 and was told repeatedly don't buy one of the radio remote ones, it took me less than a day to fit up and I have no experience in this area. Hope this helps
