Queenstown, Tasmania

This spot is called the Gravel Oval - a football oval, gravel covered, with a large parking area, not too far out of town - it is in Camps #6, but as I only have #5, don't have the number available.  A bit of a slope where we are camped, but there are level spots, there is a kids Christmas party on here today, put on by the mine, so a lot of cars parked in the area today.

Internet and phone reception is good.

If the ABT railway is running to Strachan Jules, do yourselves a favour and go on it! Fantastic day out, and we learned a lot about the early settlers and miners and those amazing railway workers who built it.

Will have a look tomorrow GD - the rain is coming down now - spoiling the kids fun - there was a fun day for them put on by one of the firms here - everybody is running, and there are people pulling all the rides down in the rain - we are snug and dry inside, thank goodness!!

Apparently it rains a huge amount there... average 1.5 METERS! Thats the reason for the blue metal on the camp ground, when the mines were producing sulphur fumes, no grass would grow, and the soil washed away. Queenstown used to be like a moonscape! We just wore coats and went out anyway.

Cradle mountain has over 300 rainy days a year, you did very well with your lovely day there Jules, not to mention view of snow!
