We took it out because it was over 6 months between when we booked and when we were going to travel. I don't remember it adding all that much to the overall cost - was worth it for peace of mind. We didn't need to use it. Some banks I think, provide travel insurance when you use their card to pay.
Check with the Spirit of Tassie folk as they may recommend some appropriate travel insurance companies.
Most, if not all, travel insurance providers have policies that cover travel within Australia. They should be able to quote for either full cover or cancellation only.

When I'm in Australia I live in Tassie. I usually only book one way coz I never know when I will return. Only necessary to book a return well in advance if you are considering travel in school holidays, Christams or Easter holidays.
