GPS for a big rig?

As I said in another post, we have finally acquired a rig - an 11.5 tonne, 8.5m bus.  It is dead sexy!biggrin

However, on the way home, the GPS and local information from Visitor Centres saw us in a few sticky spots - we need dedicated big rig GPS maps - so probably a new GPS.  We currently have a Navman MY65T, which is great for the 4WD, but not the bus (Marriners Lookout at Apollo Bay anyone?!)hmm An image of the road there (which we were told was fine for us, "They get coaches up there all the time!), is attached - we took up almost all the road, and it was all up or down, and windy as Hell, rather scary.

We are also looking for side/rear camera suggestions.

Cheers! smile

Rosie, not sure about the MY65T but we've recently downloaded a heavy vehicle add-on for our MY85XLT. If available for your unit it could be a sensible option.

Certainly not all,but most GPS Units have an Option in "Settings",to select Your

Type of Vehicle,IE,Car, Truck, Bus,Pedestrian etc,as well as the types of roads it will allow,or exclude

To be honest, you have to be a little careful with GPS units,as they can "get it wrong",on all counts

In saying that,I love them, and Would Not travel anywhere, without one.

We have had several GPS units, over the last few years,or so,the main ones using the "IGO 8" engine variants,

and they do have this Option,

If I remember correctly, our early "Destinator Engined" GPS, from several years ago, also had the same option.

(deleted the Destinator engine, replaced it with IGO 8.0)

A larger GPS,will not necessarily provide what you need,it's all to do with the software, driving it.

There are 2 main Maps for Australia, one is Sensis,by Telstra ( supposedly Best for City Driving)

the other is Navteq,( supposedly Better for Country Driving)

For Off Road the Preffered System is Oziexplorer, not for the Faint Hearted,or Inexperienced GPS User.

Please be aware,None of these are perfect, they all have their good, and Bad points

Regards.

John.

Have you checked the Navman website?  They may have the big rig maps available, or tell you how to get them.  If you have to buy a new GPS, the salesperson shoould be able to set you up with what you need.  I vaguely recall mention of certain units for big rigs (that is, not all GPS's provided maps for larger units) when I was looking, but as it wasn't a concern to me I didn't give it a lot of notice; perhaps a discussion with a truckie would be useful.

Best of luck and enjoy travelling!
