pets on leash

Hi everyone,

I am constantly argung with CP managers over my dog,I sincerely believe it should be up to the owners to keep their pets  under control and if they  need a  leash  to do this  I am sure that  they  know  this but if as  with my dog  he  does  as  he is told then why  should  he be restrained in this manner.I would love  to hear  others ideas  on this.

Welcome to GN forum John and Smiley.

Why argue? life's too short, it's a simple rule, keep your dog on a leash, if you disagree with the requirement then move on and find a park that meets your needs.

Guess if you are constantly arguing with CP managers then a little self relection may be required, i.e. who's the one out of step here.

As a matter of interest we have a very well behaved Lab, when in van park she is either on a leash tied up or in the van.smile

Hi John and Smiley

You have a well behaved dog as I do but.....

We enter cp's with the agreement to follow their pet friendly guidelines while staying on their property. I would hate it if the cp managers decided to become Not Pet Friendly, then where would we be.

My Ruby will only wander a few meters around the site for a sticky beak but that is breaking the agreement so.....

I solved the problem by buying a small fence from the pet shop. It surounds the area under the awning and gives her plenty of space to choose where she want to lay. No more lead caught on chair legs or poles. It also stops other dogs from coming to near.

I still have the lead for walking around the cp, but when we leave the gate, no more lead and back to normal.

Don't argue, be a happy camper.

Well said Helen!

We also have a "fence" made from plastic trellis material - when we have stayed in CP's the owners seem quite happy with the arrangement.

Always on a lead when walking around the park and free to have a wander when safe to do so.

I think it is important to comply with CP rules so that that they are happy to stay Pet Friendly.

Cheers

Perhaps the word argument is not correct,we do comply with the regulations under sufference but my only wish is for the CP managers to perhaps look at changing the rules as a lot of the ones  we  have  been to.One park in Victoria, the manager actually lets  his dog off  every afternoon for a  run around  the  park and  he often played  for  hours  with  our dog but  both  were under control if we  called  them they  would do as  asked. We have  been to several parks  in the  southern states  and we  loved  the  attitude, but, here in coastal Qld it is a different attitude  alltogether.Looks like we gotta  go west and  see if they  are  better.

Hi John and Smiley and welcome to the forum.
You have opened a pandoras box re the management of pets in CPs. So many of us comply with everything they ask of us, and still the number of dog friendly parks dwindle, mostly due to people pushing the boundaries.

We are now excluded from many parks and now pay up to $50 per dog as a bond in some places..... all because many individuals choose not to pick up dropping, not to lease dogs, not to leave dogs unattended.....

My dogs too come when called, but that doesn't mean every dog does.

My dogs too don't like being confined in the van and on leash, but the option is that or stay home.

I am not for one minute suggesting we break the rules but I simply ask why cant the parks give ruling "under control" we al know the dogs that are not and those are the ones should be tied but the ones behave should be given a little leeway

Hi John & Smiley,

Let me first start by saying that we are also dog owners.

Your issue in this is viewed from an owners emotion. On the other hand there are many vanners that do not have pets and view it to keep themselves pet free (meaning don't want anyone elses pet). The poor CP operators sit in the middle and try to let pet owners have access whilst catering for non pet owners at the same time. These non pet owners can be deathly scared of dogs so that creates (in their minds) a fear of dogs not restrained by a lead. We are well understanding of voice command, however for some it only takes 1 instance of seeing a dog not obey under voice command and no matter how much you protest the CP operators will pander to the others and require physical control.

Lets assist the CP operators to try and make it fair for all their customers, otherwise custom will drop, the CP operators will go broke and we'll all be in free parks with substandard ammenities.

Happy travelling with your furry family.

PS. Your post has made me think of our discontent at other peoples children that annoy the wits out of us. Maybe leads are required on anything under 3' tall.

I know when we took our dog ben (the border collie) I'd have him sit with me out side the van,
he on a nice lead so he could wonder around the van with out going any where,
so many times we'd be sitting there minding our own business and some ones dog
big or small would come over and give ben greif , some times was friendly and all ok
but some time wasnt so friendly and had to put ben in side the van till the owner of the other dog
came to collect.. wasnt fair on us.. doing the right thing..
but its not just caravan parks, when you take your dog for a walk on a lead like it says on the sign at the park
and some ones dog comes up and gives you a hard time ,off their lead.. not fair..
but you put up with it, what else do you do.. if the park or cp says dogs controlled on lead, just do it
for the peace of mind ... you go away for a holiday , not a headache...

Helen,

Love the fact that someone else is owned by a Silky. Our beautiful girl died in February. We are waiting for a new girl in January and like yours she will have a full tail.

To keep on topic. We have an annex and ensured that the windows go to the ground and that the doors have zipped screens so that our dog can see out, not be on a leash and she can feel right at home. We always walk our dog on a lead as we don't/didn't want anything to happen to her; plus it's the rule.

LOL I guess I dont have any sympathisers here,I was really trying to find out if anyone else has a dog they can control without the need for a leash and agrees with me that the wording for the rule should be "under control" because if the animal is under control there is no problem with it either annoying others or them bothering it,whether it be by physical control with leash or verbal control, all your comments are taken on board but I still think the same way, perhaps i am out of step but I do know of plenty parks I have visited where we had no problem and will continue to look for them.Just as a bit of info as to why i brought this up.....................I did ring the current place and was told by one half of the management ok and when arrived was told by other half not ok.The current place is a large campsite in bushland setting and we are on 127 acres and 25 powered sites. We are down the end with very few neighbours, yes the cranky half lay in wait for me after taking the poor dog for a long walk in the bush and we were returning to camp, she was very nasty and noneed for her bitchyness.

Hi again,

It's not that we are not sympathic toward your concerns.

But as passionate as you are about your beloved pet and your prowess at voice command/control off lead, there are others that will bleat that they are better at it than you.

Without doubt I could line up 10 (non competition) dogs and have a minimum of 7 fail voice command in the family/public environment.

Simply this is just another case of setting the bar so low that all can excell at dog control, and the lowest form control is physical control on a lead.

CP operators, and most people, always want the easiest way to achieve something.

Cheers

Hi John and Smiley

Could you please tell me where your off lead cp's are. Ruby and I would love to stay there awhile and experience doggie freedom.

if you don't want to keep your dog on a leash then go somewhere else. I am tired of other peoples dogs charging out to 'say hello' while I am leading my dogs for a walk. The only dogs I have found that will stay by their own van and not bother others are generally old nice dogs with sensible owners. Others think they are paying for free rein over the whole park and let fido annoy everyone else by running free. Others that stuff it up for everyone else are the lazy lot that are too good to pick up their dog's poo. This happens at the free camps as well.
My dogs are well trained and 'under control' BUT they are still animals and so to keep them safe and avoid upsetting anyone they are on a leash, in the van or in their crates, under PHYSICAL control.

Evening John, in your OP you state "I am constantly argung with CP managers over my dog" yet here you say "have  never  gone  to a  park yet  that is  pedantic about  the  rule"???

I'm a dog owner/lover as well and love to see my Lab running free, however in a caravan park situation I'm happy to abide by the rules they have set.

Remember the old saying " the nail that sticks up will be hammered down" sometimes you just have to go with the flow.smile

To those who think the dog friendly parks are dwindling i am pleased to tell you that that is false in my experience they are increasing but there are a lot of so called dog friendly parks that are only dog friendly on the internet but when you experience it it is a different thing and as for my original post please look at the following ones i am not against keeping pets under control but i am totally for looking after my dog and being courteous to other dog owners by not allowing my dog to be a pain to the owners.

Eskdale CP is a nice park and well worth a stop if you wish to explore the area. Been there a few times with my 4WD Club using it as a base camp.

John has a a comment on http://www.traveldogsaustralia.com/eskdale-caravan-park.html and says in part "we have no problem with the usual regulations in many caravan parks" which certainly conflicts with the OP.

BTW good post Rip and Rosie.

When not keeping your dog leashed you are "being a pain" to other owners.

When we see your dog running free, and ask why, you say "My dog is special, he's trained"

Well, my dog is special too. He's been to obedience school, can sit, come, stay, and walk beside me without a leash. Mine too knows his name and will come when called.

Now there's 2 unleashed dogs. Soon 3, 6 and 8 and no one asks about obedience school anymore.

They wander along, do their business wherever, and if un-noticed do not get picked up after.

Never mind, you say, just one poo won't hurt, but then its 3, 6 or 8 dogs pooing.

They don't recognise my "territory" and wander close to my site and set my dogs off barking, and my neighbours complain.

Then there's the dog fight, and then not one of those dogs hear its name being called, and one gets hurt, usually (but not always) the smallest one.

"Not my dog's fault" you say "My dog's trained"

I have noted all of those parks which you recommend, and will never be using any of them.

Excellent post R&R, all valid points.

"I have noted all of those parks which you recommend, and will never be using any of them." my thoughts as well.

I've met Allara and her dogs, they are beautiful. Dont know if she uses them for work or show any more, but they are very well cared for, and well loved, that is for sure.

That's what I've read - show dogs. And show dogs work extra hard at being well behaved.
