I flew a Peter Powell stunt kite when I was a kid, not that easy to keep in the air. had to count how many spins in each direction to keep lines untwisted.

Imagine my surprise when I saw it was one person flying all three !!!

I wish we would embrace kite flying like they do in China, some of their flyers are amazing too.

My only experience was as a kid with the crossed sticks with newspaper or brown paper glued on, string for a tail with bits of rag tied on at intervals to give it balance, and of course a ball of string......never was much good at it cry

Seems a pity that kids don't have that thrill of making the old greaseproof paper, split cane and flour glue kites and then learning how to fly them these days..

Seems to be more fun to have the ubiquitous iPhone or iPod with earphones blasting their eardrums.

Noticed how many drive with the earphones in these days!

I have one of those new fangled ram air kites made from Nylon like the modern parachutes.Only two metres wide but in a strong wind can drag you off your feet if you are not careful. Great fun and washable of course.

Guy in Cairns sells them over the internet.

Back in the mid 70's when I was up in Irian Jaya with the RAAF, the local kids showed us how to make their style of kite. Very light weight and almost a square shape with no tail at all. They were difficult to master, but these little kids were so skilled at it and used to have kite fights. Very often the kite string had powdered glass stuck to it, so that if you wrapped your kite string around the other kite string and yanked it at the right time, you'd cut the other kite off. Making you the winner. Another tradition was that if your kite got cut off, the one who got to it first laid claim to it. But when one of our kites got cut off by a kid from the neighbouring kampong and fluttered down into the bush, our bunch of kids all bolted over and had a punch-up with the kids from the other kampong and returned with our battered kite. Was funny but also a bit awkward too as we didn't want to be the cause of a battle between the two groups. These kids were from about 8 to 12 years old, so it wasn't all that serious i suppose.
