Extreme fire conditions on Yorke & Eyre Peninsula

Thank you Dunmowin! Yep, saw aussietravellers post, noted down the web-sites, havent looked them up yet. It was something I thought I'd do "if needed". Hmmm... think I'll crawl away and hide now....

Edit... PS. Hope the people of the York and Eyre Pen stay safe, I was there shortly after their last disastrous fire, terrible.

Extreme weather in South Australia today, prediction for Adelaide is 37 degrees.  Total fire bans are in force for Yorke & Eyre Penisulas, with Catastrophic Fire Danger.  We spent three weeks on the Yorke a couple of weeks ago.  With the barley and canola ready for harvesting, the land is like a big tinder box, waiting to explode.

Similar conditions for Mid North (Balaklava in middle of) but on EXTREME FIRE DANGER, so I am watching the news, and the horizon.

Currently JUDEBRU  and TAJ, fello forum grey nomads are on Yorke peninsula.  Hope they camp safely and stay out of harms way.

I'm still confused about what you are supposed to do if in a catastrophic fire danger area. Presumably you should leave, but where do you go?

I have just been on the SACFS web site, they give specific fire plans for each area, including maps of "safe" areas, eg, sports stadiums etc.  Currently the township of Balaklava is a "safe" area.

There is a forum thread on page 2 posted by aussietraveller with links to each state fire services, and a lot of other information.

Hi TAJ we stayed at Minlaton back in May/June and also found it to be a good base. Yes, there wasn't a lot to see at Marion Bay but pretty getting there. Stay safe and stay away from the fires.

If by any chance I was to find myself in any of these situation I would move on very quickly to a safe region many KLM. away.

When there is a catastrophic fire warning there is only one option and that's to get out as quickly and safely as possible, if you are travelling to a safer place always have an alternate rout planned because fires travel much more quickly and actually create their own extremely strong winds, if at all unsure ask local fire brigade or police for advice and it may also be advisable to leave the van in as safe an area as possible and travel car only and come back for it after the fire has passed.
The further you are away from the fire you are the safer you are which is obvious but fires can travel many kilometers in very short time especially with strong winds that carry burning embers 20 - 30 klm
Be safe

Yes, it was hot yesterday, 37.5 in the annex, thank god the air con works well in the van.  Glad you are happy in Milaton, good central base for the southern parts of the peninsula
