I upgraded from a very old ZTE 165 to a Nokia Lumia 800 wiyh Windows 7 (now 7.50) through Telstra back in April this year. Sadly this phone cannot be fully upgraded to Windows 8 but will be upgraded to 7.8 which has some of the features of W8.

Personally I preferred the look and feel of this phone compared to the iphones and have found the operating system very easy to setup and use. I do not use this smart phone anywhere near to its full potential. To me it is a phone/SMS device that has a few very nice extras some which I downloaded.

On the other hand Shirley has an iPhone 4s and she gives that phone a good workout, plus Facebook.

Upgrading a desktop/laptop/whatever to Windows 8 has nothing whatsoever to do with a Smartphone that has Windows 8 as its operating system.

re your laptop, try pressing the windows key on the left of the keyboard and on the left of the Alt key, it will revert to a look alike win 7, from there you can access the Microsoft shop and buy a start menu for $2.00 then you have win 7 back again, I was told this yesterday by a salesman in JB HiFi, he demonstrated it and it did work.

I don't want a "look alike" Win 7, I want my Win7 OS back? The windows button only brings up the desk top.

You cannot do reload the Win7 OS without a special programme and a lot of mucking about, including a "clean start up."

Looks like I'll have to suffer until enough driverss and programmes get onboard.

There are some good points about it though.

My smart phone has a dumb owner.

Recently upgraded laptop to W8, not sure I like it yet.

It managed to wipe out a lot of my old programmes and will not let me reload them.

Apparently there is not a lot of drivers and programmes written for W8 yet, should have waited a bit longer and you cannot revert back to W7.

Sadly it seems Windows has produced another dud with W8, I've been with MS since W95 and was reasonably happy up to XP, since then it's all been down hill.
My next purchases in the phone or computing field will not have anything to do with MS, I can hear Apple beckoning.

I downloaded a beta version of win 8 onto my laptop and it crashed my computer, and I had to format the hard drive, and reload win 7, after loosing all my files and pics. Will keep away from win 8 as long as possible. Bill

the only way to go back is a reformat and reintsall of Win 7 then you will need to install all the programs you had on before you went to Win 8

Why go to Win 8 when Win 7 was a perfectly good operating system, Win 8 has really been designed for tablets and phones and Win 7 will be around for many a year to come, I will probably only change from XP when it is no longer supported.
Why would you want to give yourself all the grief, that a new operating system always brings with it, when it is first introduced.

agree with you duchy i just bought a new puter win 7 with the works i7 processor 1tb/8gig and i can have win8 for $15 but dont think i will bother

Win 8 is not for tablets and I phones, Win 8RT is for tablets, I think the best way to go is quickly get a new computer with Win 7 installed, there are still some out there.

Hey Wombie, that's what I did.

I purchased a new laptop for the "boss"and it came with Windows 7 Premium and a bonus Windows 8 Pro disc. Being the "smart" I am, I thought, "lets not bugger up the new lap top and have a complaining boss on my hands, I'll load it onto mine and we can both have a play."

The wife does not like it, I am slowly getting used to it, having been on it most of today. Big problem for me is that it does not like my navigation charts. Hoping Garmin can sort this out this week coming.

I must say that it has made the computer faster. Getting used to fact that the desktop is obsolete and we now have another page apparently called a metru, which like the smartphone is covered in "widgets" which we got used to being "shortcuts or thunbnails."

Be damned if I am going to load Win 7again.

KenM, a lot of techies I have spoken to do not like Win 8 but I would have thought it was just a case of getting used to the changes, think I may put it on an old system of mine just to have a play and see if I could get used to it, too busy to do it now, will have to do it b4 the end of January 2013 or the price will jump to about $200 or so I have been told.

Whenever a new OS is released there are always people that say it's cr*p, there are also people that say it's the best thing since sliced bread. If you never never go, you'll never never know. But like most Micro$oft products, it's very hard to say whether it will last or not. After all we are only beta testers for the second, third etc release of the OS anyway. Unfortunately we have to pay for that privilege.
