We have purchased from the King of Knives a long blue strip of plastic called Messermeister. We have cut it to fit the blades our our knives and it has been successful for us,.

This may sound a little silly but this is what I was thinking of doing. Get a large magnet and attach it to the inside kitchen draw with double sided tape and the knife should stay in place on the side of the draw. cheers.

I have seen an arrangement similar to this. When I was volunteering in the kitchen at Meals on Wheels there was a magnetic rack on the wall where all the kitchen knoves were stored. It may have come from a place that supplies kitchen stuff to professional kitchens.
We made knife sheaths from heavy cardboard, just cut them to fit and glued, the knives live in their sheaths in the same drawer as the cutlery and all the other utilities.

Exactly what I am looking for ... Was thinking of pinching a couple of plastic strips from my son's old hand saws. Probably a couple lying in the base of the tool box.
Off to King of Knives tomorrow (after I fit the new LED tail lights to the van).
I have also been thinking of making up a segmented canvas roll for the knives, but the sewing machine is broken.
ps. Got an excellent knife sharpener from a market somewhere on the Mornington Peninsular on a recent trip. Light weight plastic thing that works well for el cheapo knives.

Yes, the magnetic rack attached to the wall works well. We've used one for the last four years on the road, storing four assorted knives and even the vegetable peeler; only the peeler sometimes falls off!
You can buy one made by Wiltshire from BigW for $25.
