You are getting closer...... Are you coming south to Dubbo via Tamworth? I was going to Nundle then found Lake Chaffey - will drop the van off tomorrow and go exploring. Might stay here a few days I think - lovely sunset and very friendly neighbours. Only $2 per night

Moved onto Miles (QLD) today - rain threatening so I thought I'd sit it out in a van park for today and tomorrow. People had warned me of the Leichardt Hwy between Theodore/Taroom/Miles. There are a few patches which some may find trying - but only about 2km in length at a time which are a bit up&down sort of, and a stretch which is narrow - but still my van and a roadtrain could pass without too much trouble. Overall, I thought it was quite OK and I have certainly travelled on much worse.
Yesterday and last night I spent at Isla Gorge National Park campground. Sheer bliss - I had the place all to myself, buried in the silent bush with glorious weather.
Whilst Isla Gorge is not extensive, it is definitely worth a day to explore. Camps6 suggests the campground supports "Big Rigs", but you would have to be first in pretty much. I had a space which fitted my van, but if another large van arrived, we would have to either become VERY friendly or they would have needed to move on. The National Park website says it is suitable for caravans and buses, but I think they mean to drive in to the day use area, view, take a couple of photos, and drive back out. The road in is a very good dirt, hard gravel, road - should even be OK in the wet.
I can't let the opportunity pass without sharing a couple of photos of Isla Gorge.
Oooh! lovely! thanks for the photos RL, brought back memories. Looks as if you were in our camp spot, but as you say, there isnt much choice. We stayed there a couple of days, too nice to leave!
I will be in Dubbo this coming Wednesday arvo. My Landy is booked in for a service on Thursday. I will be going through Goondiwindi and then straight down the Newell to Dubbo. If all goes well, I will probably head off from Dubbo on Friday for Forbes to that camp Yeoeleven highlighted for us. Beyond that - who knows
Cheers - John

I stayed at the one in Forbes that John, yeoeleven talked about. Magic. Its along the river and at night the river lights up with all the lights from the town. Its worth a stay.
