I have been getter numerous calls from overseas (unknown number) wanting my account details as they are having computer problems. This is an odvious scam, and DO NOTgive them your details. Its very fishy when Telstra doesn,t know you acc details. The lady said "yes , we are overseas, but we are from telstra"! Yeah, I believe in the tooth fairy, also.

Australian Government websites Scamwatch and Stay Smart Online frequently warn of these scams. Their advice is to hang up immediately. Those of us who are registered with these sites are frequently emailed with warnings of these and other scams and threats.
These criminals couldn't care less about the Do Not Call Register. Being on the DNC register will only protect you from legitimate telemarketers.
Telemarketers have to check the DNC to ensure they don't "cold call" anyone on the register. Charities, Politicians (surprise surprise!) and those firms with an existing business or customer arrangement with the "callee" are exempt.
As it's up to the telemarketer to check with the DNC register, one would have to be naive in the extreme to think that criminal scammers would do this.
The DNC does work with legitimate telemarketers.
Scamwatch and Stay Smart Online recommend hanging up on these scam calls without engaging in any conversation whatsoever.

I kept getting the same call from overseas,...... you are having trouble with your Computer,
We can fix it if you give us your details, Bla...Bla...Bla
My answer has been,...Yes I have been having some trouble, Hang on a Sec, I'll go and turn it on.
I then place the phone on the table and forget it.
Another problem I have experienced has been, the phone rings but when I pick it up, No one is there.
I learned from an American Web Site that this call I received was more than likely generated by a computer from an over seas telemarketing Company.
If my phone is picked up, it tells them that there is someone home at a certain hour.
The best way to fix this problem (going by the Americans ) is to immediately hit the hash key several times ####
this apparently will throw their Computer out of whack and make it delete your phone number from their records.
hopefully this will work.

kiwijim, hitting the #### may also give them access to your phone, they in turn will make a lot of long distance calls, I would not use the #### or any key, the only other option is to use an answering machine in this situation IMHO
