Jayco Conquest - Fiat Ducato wing mirrors

Having a big problem with the wing mirrors in this Jayco, they fold in with any medium to heavy wind and every time a truck gos by in the opposite direction. Getting very dangerous hanging out the window pushing them back into position. The lock into position but when we get wind or a truck go by, whoosh and they fold in. Passenger steers while driver hangs out the window to puch them back in, otherwise we have to drive blind or pull up blind every few hundred meters on some occasions when wind is bad.

Anyone with answers on how to adjust these things, does not look easy to get covers off to tighten them. Have had a lot of Trouble getting repairs through Jayco with this "NEW" Conquest Motorhome in WA, now travelling and in Port Augusta tonight, off again tomorrow. Oh, also have had the kitchen tap lever fall off, massive etallic noise when we start off, squeaking suspension, squeaking brakes, water pump makes lights go dim, front window blind tack fell off, trim coming off inside the living area, side storage door has paint peeling off, etc.....the things faling apart as we move ....do not buy a Jayco.

Anyway, maybe if I could get the mirrors fixed it may not be so dangerous? so if anyone has advice please.

Len.

No problems like that - except the lights sometimes dim when we use the pump - but that is to do with the power availability I think. Where are you headed? If going via Melbourne - make the effort and head to the Jayco Plant in Dandenong - ring them or just call in - we have had some minor things fixed with no problems by Jayco - in Brisbane - but I am sure that the Head Office in Dandenong would be the best place - and the Fiat place is not far from them, if it is a Fiat problem, in Dandenong also.

Take care out there.

Had the same problem on Navara mirrors when i put clip-on van mirrors. Flicked the cover off the bottom, bought a long socket and tightened the bolt holding the mirrors. left the cover off as they still needed doing occasionally.

UPDATE:

Went to a Fiat Dealer in Port Augusta today, cannot fix, and no adjustent, would have to replac mirrors but no gaurentee that the new ones wouldn't do the sae thing. They suggested tying a rope to the mirror off the front nudge bar or to the door hinge. Phoned Jayco but that was three hours ago and they said they'd get back to me but have not as yet. Not getting my hopes up, heading north now so out of phone range for about a week or so, will have to wait till Brisbane and try again......Really thjought there'd just be an adjustment. Anyway, gettng used to Jaycos non care attitude so not getting as angry anymore. Still, it's a bit dangerous trying to get these mirrors back into position every few Kms.

Thanks everyone, (except Jayco) will check this page again in a week, really regret getting a Fiat or a Jayco.

Len, if Jayco don't fix it volutarily, try the Consumer Affairs in your home state. When you purchase something it must do what it is supposed to do, i.e. the mirrors must stay where they are put, not move around thereby putting you and other road users in danger. Sounds like you got a real "lemon". Good luck with getting it fixed and enjoy your travels.
Brenda.

FURTHER UPDATE:

After another 30 times straigtening the mirros I pulled up wedged some rubber int he joints and taped them up with a ton of the onlytape I had on board. All fixed for now. Yes it is a Fiat problem, but I bought this from Jayco and all the other things falling apart are part of Jayco's problem, like the paint peeling off the storage door, metallic noise from exhaust, flick mixer handle fallng off,, wter pump making lights go dim, trim fallin off ceiling etc, etc....

I'm on the road now so will have to wait till I reach Brisbane befor I get any repairs at all (both Fiat and Jayco). Point is that it's been nearly 5 months now and Jayco and Fiat have done next to nothing, they did repir a few things but actually made things worse.....they bent the metal arond my main door to amke the rubber seal sit properly......things like that. They fitted a valve to the second grey water tank, a two yer old could havedone better, I refitted a better valve myself. Maybe the Brisbane repairers will actually fix the problems, will wait and see, but for now I can see out the rear and withall the tape on the mirrors they stay in plance. But this should not be the case with a brand new motorhome that I paid $130,000 for. I would never buy a Jayco (or Fiat Ducato) ever again and strongly recommend against them. Thanks to all that offered help, will post again when and if I get things repaired.

Just got a call from Jayco and they say they will let me know the names and phone numbers of dealers on The Gold Coast so I can book it in there in a few weeks, fingers crossed (although I have heard all this before so not all that hopeful anymore)

I don't own a Jayco but owner I have talk to on the road have been very pleased with after sales service from Jayco , You may need to slow down get the bugs sorted before you move on

You're all probably right, but I started by taking it slow, gave them 4 months to sort out the problems and just went around and around in circles, going in smaller circles now, soon I'll probably be going up my own you know what. But planning to just take it easy, put up with what's happening and try to get things fixed before the warranty runs out next June. I've already fixed a number of things myself and the minor things I can still fix myself, just not sure how far I should go at my own expense considering this thing was bought as new. Just that where I am now (Coober Pedy) is not he best place to slow down and get things sorted....no one here to sort them under warranty, plan to slow down when I get to Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

Out of email and phone range tomorrow for a few days, thanks all for the suggestions and support.

The Jayco dealer in Brisbane - Brisbane Camperland - are great at service, nothing too much trouble for them. I would recommend them - haven't dealt with the Gold Coast dealers.

Was thibks of Caravan and Motor Home Repairs in Miami on the Gold Coast only because we have friends ont eh Gold Coast who we can visit while it's being repaired. Anyone have any concerns with them or are they a good repairer?

Oh, also noted today that the wall panels on two sides of the Shower/Toilet wall has bubbled out from half way up to the top of the wall, I can push it back in one place and onother bit bubbles out, can hear the tackyness of the glue behind the panel. These Jayco Motrohomes are seriously flawed. Just yet another thing to fix.

Also anyone thinking of getting an Ibis Air Conditioner in theri motorhome with the hopes of having a Generator run it, don't beileve Jayco when they tell you a Honda U20i or Yamaha EF-2000is will run it, as it will not. Air Command told me you need at least a 2800kw Generator to keep one going, but no room for such a generator in a Jayco Motorhome. I have a Yamaha EF-2000is and it only just fits, as does a Honda U20i, and will start the Air Con but when it goes into cool mode it cuts out on overload. The Air Command guy says when it gets over 25 degrees only a 2800kw has a chance to start the Ibis Air Con. The soft start was put in models since 2005, but that's no help. So I paid $1800 for a Generator Jayco said would work (and it does une 25 degrees), would love to take it back and shove it up their.........you know what. Do not just trust what anyone from Jayco tells you, check it out wth others first, learnt my lesson the hard way.

.. Hi Len

I run a Fiat Ducato like many others on here .. Mine is not a Jayco and I've had my problems also ! .. problems are not unique to just one brand of MotorHome but after much dissatisfaction with my manufacturer from virtually new, I chose to try to rectify any problems as they happened and with moderate success .. We all have ongoing problems regardless of our mode of transport, but what I have found is that I now know a lot more about my vehicle, its current status and how it best works .. Sure, it might take a little more application on my part, but I'm far more relaxed now that I dont rely on the manufacturer for support. I appreciate that we all have different preferences in life, but that is how I now enjoy being a GN ..

Where there is a will, there is a way .. even if it takes a while ! .. but its much nicer to be in charge rather than listen to manufacturers that "talk-the-talk" but cant "walk-the-walk" ..

I had a mirror problem also for some time on the L/H/Side ..  I modified some hard rubber stoppers that I attached with velcro to prevent (jam) the mirror from moving out of its "lock" position. Initially over the first 2 weeks I had to make minor adjustments to take up the slack by simply removing and refitting the stoppers on the velcro .. after about 2 months I noticed that one of the stoppers had fallen by the way, yet the mirror still retained its position .. Luckily for me the mirror still holds true today and without anything supporting it externally .. it occasionally moves if in an extremely strong head-wind, but I can handle that ..

good luck mate !

Jon

FINAL UPDATE.......

I have had some success. Just returned from my 4 month holiday so haven't had much of a chance to post earlier.

The Fiat dealer in Dandenong tightened the mirrors. After being told by nearly every Fiat dealer around Australia that it could not be done, this guy said no problem and took the vehicle into the workshop and tightened them. He would not show me how to get the covers off to do it or how he did it and said I would void the warranty if I tried. I was just happy to have them tight again. The held up fine for the rest of the trip. Wish this guy would tell all the other dealers how it's done....but seems he didn't want to share.

With the other problems I took the vehicle to Dandenong Jayco after a bit of trouble booking it in before their Xmas holiday break, got it in there for a day and they did some of the minor repairs, like replacing the kitchen mixer that fell apart, re gluing an edging strip, replacing a grey water valve that was hanging off and faulty, replacing a storage door where paint was peeling off and a few other minor things. They also unfixed a cupboard that kept coming off the runners because they originally made the rear of the draw space 1cm wider than the front, I had padded ot the rear runner to compensate as a running repair and asked them to fix it properly, their fix was to undo the repairs and now the draw comes off the runners again....what the? I've given up and will fix it myself properly now that I'm home.

I still have some major repairs to be done, like shower wall panels bowing in on hot days, paint peeling on yet another storage door (all the storage doors are a different shade of white, looks odd), rusting exhaust end, luton windows whistle in the wind (annoying when trying to sleep and louder when driving). I've given up on the WA branch of Jayco actually helping, but will put it in for the major repairs when I find a good repairer. Now that I'm home again and have my tools and equipment I'll do most of the other stuff myself.

Still would never buy a Jayco again, I accept there will always be some problems with anything you buy, but with Jayco the problems are due mainly to poor quality control and the use of poor quality or cheaper quality parts. While Dandenong helped and were prepared to fix the problems, I cannot always take it back to Dandenong (from WA) and the WA repairers have so far done more damage that they have fixed. The Gold Coast repairers wouldn't even book it in unless they had at least two weeks for even the most minor of repairs and dealing with Jayco trying to get somewhere for repairs while travelling was an absolute pain, thus I took a deviation on my holiday and took it to Dandenong who also, with 5 weeks notice, could only book it in for one day and only do some minor repairs. Jayco WA branch just don't want to know after they sell you the vehicle, they leave it up the the reparers to deal with customers and refuse repairs behind the scenes (as I was told by one repairer).

Fiat was overall good and I've changed my opinion as it was reliable and got me around without any real problems, although most Fiat dealers let me down on the mirror repairs till I found the only dealer on the other side of Australia that would take a few minutes to fix it properly.

Yep, I saw your suggestion, just that it took untill the sixth Fiat dealer across Australia while I was on holidays to actually know how to fix it or attempt it, and even he wouldn't tell me how it was done. Most said they could replace the mirrors but the replacements would probably be the same and it would take weeks to get the parts, one dealer (in Port Augusta) added that I could tie them back to the nudge bar...that's when I gave up and taped them up. The Dealers in Brisbane (East Coast Fiat?) had it for an afternoon and said they could replace them but there was no way to adjust them (thay said they had contacted Fiat and that's what they were told) and I'd have to wait a couple of weeks for the parts, could not do that as was only there for a week.

Believe me I tried to get a Fiat Dealer to fix them, six times, I know that while travelling I was a bit restricted as to where I could get it in, and I did phone a couple of places off my planned holiday route in the hopes of getting repairs, but not great when I had to travel to Dandenong to find the only dealer who could do the repairs.

Just putting this in so if anyone needs Fiat Mirrors tightened then the Guys in Dandenong know how to do it......head there, or refer to them when dealing with a Fiat Dealer who says it can't be done.
