Mercedes Sprinter Tent

As a newbie to the Grey Nomads arena I could do with some help.

We'd like to get a tent for the side of our Merc Sprinter so that we can leave it set up in the Caravan park whilst we go sight seeing.

Has anyone got a suggestion to make about a suitable tent for this purpose?

Thanks for your input.

Keith

Have a look at what this lady has, hers is obviously meant for a higher vehicle, but still effective, has suction cups which stick to the roof on one side, available from Anaconda and BCF camping stores and possibly others;

Not suitable to go off sight seeing though as it would have no support on one side.

Have a look at the Oztent range Keith. Not cheap but pretty innovative and well made. If you search a few forums you will get a lot of opinions and good info. They have several sizes and a lot of extensions etc. to adapt to most situations.
Happy camping!!

I've just spent 3 weeks travelling with my ute and tent, I used both a oz trail tourer 9 and an Oztent RV5.

I preferred the tourer as it was quicker to set up and pull down, minimal 4 pegs and a centre pole, but the awning wasn't really big enough to sit under.
If I was staying more than a single day, the RV5 has a bigger awning and they call it the 30 second tent, which only applies to setting it up to a basic shelter, to pack it up took up to 20 minutes to get it all back in the bag ( I saw one couple take an hour with theirs), and it weighed (about 25Kg) more than tourer 9, and had to put on the roof racks, where as the tourer 9 was folded up (I didn't bother putting it in the bag for various reasons) in a minute and I could drop in to the back of the Ute no problems, its folded size 1m x 1m x 30cm.

But next time I will purchase an awning similar to these:

we used an oz tent on our trip last year in tassie, as time goes by you get better at putting them up and taking them down, we now have a camper trailer but i still use the oz tent when i go land sailing i can put it up by myself in about 15 mins,,,it can be free standing if you want but i'd peg it down saw one take off in a gust of wind once,,, if i could work out how to use one as a land yacht sail i would, looks like they catch the wind really well............

I also would like something to use as an awning and would be great to leave in place when using the vehicle. Problem for me is that with one person it is difficult to use the awning suggested because I believe getting them back folded in the bag is difficult if not impossible for one person.

To put up and cart an oztent for me takes away the convience of just being able to pull up the van and your camped. I'm looking at the lighter nylon options or just a tarp for those reasons. I'm very interested in and appreciate the suggestions too.

Thanks for your comments Oxley, I thought you hit the nail on the head with the RV comments and an hour to pack up isn't an attractive option.

Keith

Thanks BB57 it seems we've solved the problem of a suitable sail for the land sailing . . . . .  now if only I had a solution to the original problem . . . . lol !

Cheers

Hi Keithintassie - the photo that DUH posted of the tent that the lady has on her car, looks similar to the one Yeoeleven has for his Hi Ace motorhome - not sure where he got it, but you could always ask him.

Check out BCF jetj.  Don't remember the price, but not too outrageous.

Cheers,

Sheba.

I must go and look at one of those when next in Bundy at BCF. Would be ideal for the back lift up door. Hoping to go in later this week.
