thanks for that - the towing capacity is fine for our needs which are a coromal family camper (this is first van and thought we would start small - may need to upgrade down the track if we upgrade to a full size van). The actual Jeep is the Cherokee Limited - not the Grand Cherokee which is a bit outside of our budget at the moment.
I will check out the website that has been recommended and get a cuppa to see me through it all. I did post a while back regarding the Great Wall diesel SUV, but as you can see, we have greatly changed direction since that time!

Hope this is right place to post this query - 2nd only time for me. Finally decided would like to purchase Jeep Cherokee - 2012 Limited Jeep Cherokee - diesel. Anyone had any experience with this make/model. Would appreciate others ideas, thoughts and experiences. now down to 8 weeks to retirement, so time running out. G'day chaslib, i have a 2006 2.8 diesel cherokee and am very happy with it But they are very expensive to service and for spare parts. EG; 100,000k service requires you to replace timing belt and ancilliary bits and pieces $1675. Also are you aware that the tow rating is only 2250kg.
what ever you do do not buy a jeep we owned one as was said servicing costs are very high. They do not have a chassis they are monocoque construction body work wil crack out on it. my mistake of owning one cost me $30,000 I now have a Landcruiser 100 series 4.2 diesel much better vehicle can get servicing everywhere.
Welcome chaslib. Enjoy the forum. I can't help you on your choice of car but I'm intrigued as to your comment ' now down to 8 weeks to retirement, so time running out'. Why the rush if you are retiring? Life will go on - you will be retired for the rest of your life - and I'd think you should take it carefully as to which car you choose. I know you are probably keen to get on the road but please don't make a mistake in choosing your car because 'time is running out'.
Chaslib I think you need to identify how much money you can afford to spend on a tug and what towing capacity you may require down the track if you change up to a full caravan, Are you going off road or staying on the black tar , If the Jeep has a towing capacity of 2250 KG well a ford falcon has a towing capacity of 2300 KG , Don't buy a Jeep because it look like a 4 wheel drive when a Holden or Falcon could do has good a job with less hassle , Has the ad on TV say YOU BROUGHT A JEEP
Thanks for your input And all taken on board - unfortunately time for us is running out after having a company car for all our working life, it will disappear as retirement appears. So, the car is a big consideration and one that has been under consideration for some time. Comments re cost for maintenance have been an ongoing concern and we are also considering the Santa Fee (4x4 auto diesel) they have a new release in the next month or so which may suggest a let's wait and see plan of attack. Our other car is not suitable being a nifty little Hyundai I.30 which does on average 30klm per day times 5 days a week!!
So any thoughts about the Santa Fe? We have discounted Tiguan, X-trail, Sorento. Need towing ability 2000 braked - looking up to $50k approx, auto (for Lib) and TD.

my advice is to buy a vehicle that will tow a caravan down the track. i am a licenced motor dealer and the change over will be considerable in say 3 or 4 years.buy something now that will do to tow something bigger will save a lot of hassles in a few years.good luck
I don't know if it's any help, but I had a Santa fe diesel before my current Pathfinder. The only reason I changed was the towing capacity. The fe is limited to 2 ton - I needed 2.5 ton.
I can honestly say the Santa Fe was the best car I've owned. I towed a Goldstream camper at 1800kg and barely noticed it. Fuel consumption was incredible and it was a dream off road.
Jeep have always had problems with reliability, but the new models are impressive and maybe the reliability has been sorted.
Thanks Graham, we are planning on test driving the Santa Fa, we have been very happy with the little i30 and the service from the dealer. The run off vehicle is very impressive and they are offering very attractive deals, so will be interested also to see the new model which is due in September or October. My jeep is very reliable . It has never broken down. Its just the regular maintenance costs that are high. It also has a full ladder chassis and low ratio gearbox. I think it maybe the Patriot that now has a monocoque chassis. Or the compass.
sure did the whole experience ended up costing me $30,000 not something I would want anyone else to have to go through as you get no help from jeep the warranty is a joke it took 2 months to get some of the parts and they came from Japan hows that for a good american product
I know of at least 10 others that have the same problem as my son is a automotive painter and friends with most of the panel beaters between here and Moree it is a common problem
the towbar is fitted to sheet metal using rivet nuts which breakaway and rip out the rear subframe and the box channel on both sides of the body has to be replaced. The parts have to come from overseas
OK guys - I have sat on the side during your interesting literary ping pong and thought it time to inject a couple of queries seeing my innocent post started this!.
Many of the posts on this and - by the way, - I have sought opinions from several other forums and industry groups which have resulted in responses reflecting models anything from 5 to 10 years old - abolutly nothing quoted as based on 2011/2012 models. Don't get me wrong, I am very appreciative of your comments which appear to be propelled by personal experiences and these, it do respect and understand. After all, who would not be majorly ticked off if they had a $10-$30K repair bill for a vehicle that they believed would fulfill their expectations and the dealers promises!
BUT.... what I would like to do now is to separate and to isolate the target models you have in your "sights" and ask "are we posting about the current models, ie. 2012? if not, can you comment on any improvements since then and now?" I do like lively debate, but nobody so far has indicated what year model they have problems with! As for our decision on a vehicle ......... THE JURY IS STILL OUT, SO BRING IT ON!
By the way, I have today reviewed the specs for the 2013 Santa Fe and am wondering now if we should be looking at the tried and true tradies dual cabs and give the SUV's the flickas we will rarely have more than us in the vehicle!!!!???? The issues re the maintenance/parts/service costs for the Jeep are well known and concerning.
I am inclined not only to keep an open mind, but also remember "bad news sells papers!"
We am so looking forward to meeting you all over over a campfire on the road in the months to come!

Well - back again with details regarding the final choice and purchase of our new tow vehicle. 2012 Ford Territory Titanium AWD Diesel - also have purchased a 2006 Coromal Silhouette to go with it. We have the car now kitted out with extras for travelling as we are sure after a couple of years in the camper, we may just want to upgrade to full size van for that extra comfort and convenience (we are both mid-60's). But for the moment, we are now looking forward to starting our adventures in the next couple of months with a couple of short shake down trips around the FNC of NSW. Thanks for all your input last year -
