Milo...I think you mean 78's... I think that most of them would now be available on CD...BUT... The downside is that replacing them would be an extremely expensive exercise. 78's are double sided records and have only one song per side. Buying them on CD...you would have to purchase a complete album to get the song that you want.
There are various ways that you can convert them yourself...a much cheaper method...but you said that it is too big a job for you to take on. As an alternative...have you thought of buying your dad a turntable that plays 33, 45 and 78rpm records. They are available at several places for between $50 and $100...a possible father's day gift??
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Cheers. Pam.

milo this is what you need for the records, can do 45's and 78's this unit save's the record's onto a flash stick then you can transfer them to CD's on your pooter, would be very expensive to have them done at a shop if you have a lot, not sure what you mean by 38s
Howdy Milo. Quite a few years ago i started to collect 78s and gramophones. I have more than 3000 records and five HMV gramophone players. I have specialized in rock and roll with the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Platters, Chuck Berry and heaps more. Don't be to quick to dismiss the possible values of some 78s. I have been offered $600. 00 for one harmonica tune i have with the good news i have four of them. Some Elvis are worth ten times that value. Have a look in your Dads collection for the likes of Slim Dusty and early Australian singers. People also forget the value of some recordings are best judged on the world market. An Italian Opera singer may be worth .50 cents here but in Italy it might be a different situation.
One of the biggest problem before you can record any tunes is the cleaning of the record and that alone is an expensive and semi complicated business. Of coarse their condition to begin with is important also. Quality needles on your player are of upmost importance or you risk damaging the record. Maybe try this first up. Just simply break out a microphone and plug it into you puter and record the tune while playing it on a 78 player via the microphone to your hard drive. All puters i know of can do this. Once on your hard drive just copy it to disc. Do a sample to be sure you are happy with the sound first up. I have done it a few times and it works quite OK however i did have a problem in so far i could not turn up the volume!!! much to the delight i would say to the neighbours!!!
Audacity is a free download you can use it you want to try editing the tunes.
