Gday...

I travelled this road last year - about this time - so my information is not necessarily pertinent. However, the road was a good quality two lane sealed road all the way.

Make sure you stop at the camps identified in CAW - particularly Middleton. Great overnighter and a good pub.

Half way between Boulia and Winton is the Lillyvale Range which has a local name of Cawnpore. Stop at the lookout - good parking at the bottom, but you can drive up to the top if it takes your fancy. Magnificent, mesa-type hills, all deep red and scraggy. I stopped and spent about a hour walking about the various outcrops and taking so many photos.

Here is a photo from the Cawnpore Lookout.

Cheers - John

Did that trip about 3 weeks ago aussietraveller . Some of the road is only single lane bitumen , so you have to get off for large trucks / road trains , but the edges are OK if there hasn't been any rain for a few days .

Generally , the road is allright though .

And , I agree , Cawnpore lookout and Middleton pub are must stops . smile

We love going through that way. Have photos from 2006 in drought & from last year after rain- such a difference. There is also a new rest area about 70ks before Boulia which was being worked on when we came through last- overlooks a valley.

Will have to look for that one Oma, when we eventually leave here. It is so nice where we are - beside a billabong just off the Donohue Highway, round the corner from the Diamantina Road at Boulia - only three of us here - peaceful, blue sky and about mid 20's.

We have just travelled from Boulia to Winton - the road is pretty good, apart from about 5k about 30 or so K out of Winton, where there is a detour - red dust got in everywhere - but can't complain, they are making the roads better all the time.

Tell your friends to make sure to stop at the Cawnpore lookout, and climb the little hill at the back - the view is awe inspiring!!!
