Marketted out

Well I am back in Westwood after going into Rockhampton this morning to one of the biggest markets I have ever attended.  I'm now so worn out & must have walked a lot of kms to get around the whole area.  I think the market (which was at the showgrounds) covered a bigger area than the Victoria markets in melbourne.  Rows & rows of stall seem to go on for ever

Was it just higgildy piggildy Kandagal or was it arranged by type?  Was there much fresh vegetable produce there?  I am hoping once out on the road that I manage to buy plenty of fresh produce and in the coastal areas plenty of fresh seafood for a change instead of frozen which is how we get it here in Inverell.

No Michele. No fresh produce. Lots & lots of old tools etc. Very much like an overgrown garage sale

We have found lots of fresh produce up north. A $2.00 pumpkin from Cairns became scones, soup, roast & give away. Bought a Pineapple at the office at Rollingstone. Big 4 for $3.00 - beautiful, sweet & juicy. Don't buy jams, relish, pickles etc from the supermarkets, as all the small towns have great produce for sale at their markets.

Markets have much better prices for fruit and veges than you buy at the supermarket.
I was quite shocked when I got here to see the supermarket prices. Dearer than down south.
So now I only buy from markets. Tomatoes 80 cents a kilo. Pumpkins for 1.00. Avocados 3 for 1.00. Mandarins 1.00 a kilo. Sweet Potato 1.00 a kilo, sometimes 80cents a kilo.

Antiquey type stuff too Michelle.  People come from interstate for it every year.   My friends' sister, who is an Antique Dealer on the Gold Coast usually comes, but didn't make it this year.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Thanks for the info this is what our journey around Australia will be all about the food and the freshness of it all and cooking delicious meals with it all.

For sure that is where I will be heading whenever I see a market HW lol.  We have markets here in Inverell twice a month and everyone buys their fruit and vegies there rather than the supermarket due to the freshness and the prices, cannot beat market prices in my opinion smilesmile

There's also markets at the the Heritage Village. I visited there when my daughter lived in Rocky. A great assortment of things. Don't remember about produce though. My daughter used to get her Neem products there.

I like markets in general, but hate them in the summer.
