In a way see your point troopy but how would any parent nowadays feel about their kid being a Cop, nowadays you would never know what you would come across........very scarey times we live in.
A parent would be proud that their son or daughter was prepared to risk their life protecting the community; and at the same time they would be worried about their safety. Just like parents and partners of those in the defense force.
I think "Force" won the poll. However, the first thing I thought of was if they change the name they will probably have to have all their stationery reprinted at tax payers' expense. Does it really matter what they are called as long as they are there when we need them?
I think I saw a Poll on TV the other day as to the name "Police Service" should be changed back to "Police Force"
I joined in the mid 70's (Victoria) under Reginald JACKSON. On his retirement, Sinclair Imre (Mick) MILLER decided to push for the name to be changed to the Victoria Police Service. Someone neglected to tell him that new print runs, registrations etc. etc. etc, would have to be reset and re run at a considerable dent to our budget; all for the sake of one word. 'Mick' changed the uniform and did all manner of things before he retired. It took some years for politicians, other Government Agencies and various other stakeholders to know whether we were the Victoria Police Force or Service. Leave it alone, save some money and get on with the job of 'Policing' and put all that time and energy into more worthwhile pursuits. Crooks really don't care who they have been arrested by, and the public I dealt with just wanted the best possible efforts by the 'plods'. P.S. Well said Chris, you get my vote for next Chief Commissioner.
Hi Pauline, I know parents worry about their kids, but it's no worse today per capita than it was. Over 26 years through four decades, I was shot twice, stabbed or knifed numerous times and beaten up more time than I've had hot dinners (I ain't wearing this face for a bet!). Many colleagues could say similar. But when you look at the amount of other professions injured or killed, well every job has it's down sides. I attended at over 200 deaths, investigated and prepared over 90 Inquest Briefs - all non Police. The only thing I would (and have) warned my grown up kids about is the havoc it plays on one's social and family life. It's really a single man/woman's game. For what it's worth.

Keith I have the greatest respect for our police force, where would we be without them (bad eggs in every facet of life, in the minority I think)........also for all the people who serve in our defence forces, nurses, teachers, doctors etc etc.........oh dear I think I digress.
Interesting comments on my original post, must say a little surprised !! My own opinion is that to me it appears that since the word "Service" was introduced things changed in peoples minds, would it not be true to say that if a person needs help from a police man for IE; helping change a tyre on an old ladies/mans car, then that's a "Service" But to get ride of a bunch of Bikies from the streets on the Gold Coast, would we want them to "service" them away or "Force" them away I think we use the two different meanings to suit us at the time We call our troops ADF, when they are helping in a natural disaster are they giving a service or a force? Interesting subject I feel, as for the cost, what the hell, state & Federal wast so much anyway, look at Qlds health debacle costs
Just my thoughts, must be getting to old I guess, glade I posted this in "I digress" anyway thanks for all the opinions
