Charleville Bush Caravan Park .

2 kms from Charleville on the Quilpie road .

Staying at this park for a few nights .

All drive through sites . Plenty of room / shade . Clean toilets / showers . Good water pressure .

Washing machine $2 per load . Clean camp kitchen with free gas BBQ . Large open fire area with wood supplied .

Powered sites $25 pn . Unpowered $20. 2 people .

Conditions . No pets . No children . No Smokers .

A fairly new park on 62 acres . If you meet the conditions , I recomend it . There is plenty to see around Charleville . The Cosmos Centre .

A highly secret USAF base was here during WW2 . People are still finding things here that  ( as late as 2 weeks ago ) in the bush that were connected to that Air -force base .

Very interesting stuff .

If you don't meet their conditions , there are other parks in the area .

"Possum Park" caravan park, 20km north of Miles (between Brisbane and Charleville), is also the site of a high secret WW2 Air Force munitions storage facility.  All part of the (alleged?) Brisbane Line.

The Charleville Bush CP is developing a new area , which should be ready by Easter 2014 , for people that do not want power .

There will be toilets and showers , and water .

Cost is expected to be $10 per night . Damn good idea if you don't have kids or pets and don't smoke .

Pity more park owners didn't have cheaper non - powered sites .

Yes - heard about the "cheaper" option at that park when we were in Charleville last year. It is a great idea, and yest it is a pity more park owners can't see the woods for the trees!

Re the Charleville airport - I worked there in the wooden building near the Cosmos centre - had a WW2 radar to track weather balloons filled with hydrogen we generated with caustic soda and ferrosilicon - found bits and pieces in the bush like glass syringes and old tin cans and the foundations of latrines etc. By the way, in time of war all military bases are top secret which is a bit of a joke really because there is always plenty of loose talk at the pub!.
Whilst there, myself, an RFDS pilot and the Scout leader took one of the Steiger Vortex rainmaking guns out in the bush to fire it. We checked first with the Mines Dept who donated black gunpowder and fuses (and turned a blind eye). Stuffed the breech with gunpowder and fuse and rammed newspaper down to compress it. Made a sort of hollow boom....no rain but the pieces of newspaper became incendiary devices and we had spot fires for for about a 100yard radius. Got some pictures somewhere...must dig them out. The old slab house down at Mangalore had slits in the walls for shooting any aborigines that attacked.
It is a fascinating area with lots of hidden history that will probably never be told.

At the Bush CP now.

The new area is opened. There is water and a dump point there. No other facilities.

You must have a toilet with you. Cost $5 pp/pn.
