Chair

This is a moon Chair.

There is another type with different legs.  I prefer the first one, which folds flat.

Cheers,

Sheba.

I am interested in finding a lightweight, comfortable  and practical chair for my travels.
I would appreciate recommendations (and photos if possible) from anyone who is very happy with their chair of choice.
Regards,
Lyn

After my old one bit the dust, literally, At Longreach Waterhole. I bought this one in Mitre 10 there. It was dearer than normal, but I had to get one. I've been very happy with it. Very comfy. Now I'm ready to buy a foot stool as well.

I am looking around as well Lynnie, I want one that is not too bulky as well but take a heavy person at the same time. I will sit on the side (Ooops, Scuse the pun) and see how things progress.

How's the new home away from home going?

I don't think anyone can recommend a chair everybody is different , the best thing to do is go to camping shop or places like Anaconda and sit in all the chairs till you find one that suits you comfort and size

Lynnie I have a normal camping chair and a moon chair. Now for anyone who doesn't know what that is please refer to earlier posts.

I do find with the moon chair that it doesn't always fit into the happy hour circle, it takes up too much room.

Some of the guys have great folding chairs, when they are unfolded they also have the foot rest as well.

We did that Brickies, after one of our old favourites broke. It was$20 @ Bunnings but no longer available, so we test-sat in a camping store and paid way too much for lovely comfortable chairs with a back high enough to rest our heads. But the big problem is, they are heavy, tricky to fold/unfold, and take up a lot of room in the tug. For that reason I wouldnt recommend them... they are "Companion" brand.
Have a go at folding and carrying them as well as test-sitting Lynnie, and good luck!

I'm waiting for Anaconda to have another sale (never shop there unless there's a sale on  .. too dear usually) and have a decent price on Spinafex Brindabella.

I test sat one & it was great for me.  High back with a sliding neck support and most importantly a detachable foor rest.  Saw them for $80.

My current one has a high back & hammock like body that is great for the back.  It has a great foot rest too.  Being in constant use when traveling for the last 12 yrs it is pretty tatty. SWMBO hates it.   I have been in touch with the importers & they don't have it in their current range buggar!  SWMBO brought the current one at Derby in 2000 but I took posession of it.

I like a directors chair. Mine is wood and canvas- bit heavy but folds fairly flat.

Rip likes a lighter aluminum one with side table.

We have gone through a few to get to where we are happy, and while trying them in the store is fine, nothing beats sitting in them at happy hour after setting up the site etc.

Be prepared to donate one or 2 to the charity shops along the way, as its a process of trial and error.

Beth I think that's like the one we just got with a certain magazine subscription. Hope it's comfy. Certainly looks as if it could cope with a 'heavier' load. Mine is an aluminium director's chair I picked up in Chinchilla at the local hardware store. Friends were telling us the other day about the latest 'cooling' chair that has pocket for an ice brick behind your back! Whatever next??

Swear by the director chair style - with metal framework. Good strong basic ones can be hard to find in the usual shops, though. We bought our current ones in 1993 in, of all places, Kununurra in WA. They have had soooo much use since then. A few years ago, I got a local canvas place to make up new seat and back as so much sun exposure had weakened the originals.
I have recently seen on an online site, Oztrail ones that I'm tempted to buy because ours are so old. The site belongs to Kulkyne Kampers. Their prices looked reasonable too.

I have the top style in Sheba's photo. It folds flat and takes up no room at all as it can lean against a wall in the van. Actually I am using it here in my house as its the only chair I've got.

Yep, that style is very comfy, and yes good for a wide load.

The only thing I can fault is the padding on the arms is tearing. I think I'll just wrap some wide tape around it to stop it going completely.

I have short legs, so any chair seat too high cuts the circulation in my legs.
I have a Coleman chair with adjustable recline, and I use a canvas folding stool for a foot rest.
The chair is expensive, BUT, it's my only lounge chair which actually suits my needs comfortably. The van couches are ok for sitting, but not good for reclining for too long. If I want to recline or lie down I use the bed.
My outside chair is my lounge chair and all purpose chair.
I carry an umbrella chair in the car for those on the spot occasions.

I've just had a thought - don't caught out with the more expensive chairs. I read a story of someone who had enjoyed using their 'expensive' chair until after being away one day, they came back, packed up and when they got home realised their favourite expensive chair which was weight coded etc had been swapped by someone and he was left with the same looking chair but not his own special one. The dearer the chair, the more the temptation I guess.

That's one of the traps of having nice stuff in your camp.
It seems the trust should only go so far.

Digressing a little, this is probably not what you're looking for but I mention it anyway for general interest...

I have found that my armchair is not suitable for sitting up at a table so I purchased one of these for about $20. It is more comfortable than it looks when used for this purpose.

I've just bought a little foot stool. I can't upload a picture at the moment...it's just twirling round & round...but it's a DMH stool, meant for sitting on, but my legs will go on it. I tried out sil's over Easter and thought it was great.

Agree Beth we have been using the three legged camp stool (DMH type) as foot stools for years.

This one has 4 legs. Sil suggested it's less pressure on problem legs to rest the lower calves on it, rather then just the feet. She has very problematic legs and has to elevate them every time she sits.

This is the type we have had for years though different brand.
http://www.wildearth.com.au/alloy-compact-folding-camp-hiking-stool-p-1481.html

With one of the stool points away from you, you then put your calves on either side of this point. Works well, though they are easy to knock over.

See Anaconda have similar on special at $15, http://camping.anaconda.com.au/adventure/Camping%20Stool

That looks pretty good David, what's the max weight to prop on it?

We prefer chairs that have a gap at the back which allows more airflow, rather than having back all the way like the one pictured above.

Like most camp armchairs mine (not the chair/stool in my earlier post) was a major hassle to get back in its bag so I purchased an Oztrail zippered armchair bag. Details at http://www.oztrail.com.au/WebPage.gtl?product=BPC-CACT-D?currentgroup=ZZZ011?currentsubgroup=CANVAS
