Just a question, I just had to get some work done on my Prado (Head, Cylinders etc). Does nayone know to pull the V6 down to get to the cylinders etc do you have to empty the gas from the aircon? Got the car back and all is great ONLY the aircon doesn't work and it did before. I can hear it kick in when I turn it on but doesn't get cold. The little view glass looks empty as well. Just thought I would put the question out there before and if I contact the dealer AGAIN. I don't want to be without the car again, I only got it back after 4 weeks.

Dougwe if the air is not working I say they loss your gas so I'd be asking to them to regas it You would loose the gas when they remove the air con compresser

Dougwe, I dont wish to recall how many cyl heads I've had off over the years. If the compressor is mounted up high near the cyl head we only remove the attatching bolts & set the compressor to the side out of harms way, cant recall ever removing one just for a head removal due to the added cost of a vacume out & a regas .
If the system was out of gas the compressor clutch will not engauge when turned on, this is controled by a gas pressure switch located near the dryer, thats the cylinder with the glass window on the top.
To check the system start car with air con off, note the front of the compressor is not turning with the belt drive, now switch air con on, centre section should be turning if system is ok.
If gas level is out the switch will not allow system to run, saftey system to protect compressor. It will run with a low gas level but will not get cold. Also check that the two wires are on this switch as its not hard to knock on off when working around the unit.

Just called into my local auto sparky who does aircon as well and they found a plug not connected and said the gas was low, suggested a service. That has been arranged for this Wednesday. They connected the plug and it is working much better now but will still get it serviced. Saves a 2 hour trip back to the dealer's mechanic that I am not over impressed with anyway (the mechanic that is) the dealer is not all that happy with him as well.
Oh well, alls well that ends well I spose.
