Just come across the following statistics Age pension Australians with a spouse are entitled to just over $16000 a year Refrigees with a spouse with hardship entitlement $46,680 a year. Not sure if this is right but know our indigenous folk are entitled to this amount. Hope I have not upset Cindy Glenda

As GD (above) says, this is UNTRUE

Quote from http://www.refugeecouncil.org.au/current/myths.html

In October 2007, RCOA issued a media release calling on Australians to ignore a hoax e-mail which claimed that refugees receive more money from Centrelink than age pensioners. Recently, a new hoax e-mail, which claims that illegal immigrants and refugees receive higher rates of payment under a number of Centrelink programs, has also been circulated. Both e-mails are blatantly inaccurate and intended to create resentment towards refugees and fuel disharmony.

More information is also available from http://www.newsroom.immi.gov.au/media_releases/269?page=21&

Note... do not confuse these legally recognised refugee immigrants with other illegal immigrants.  Quote from the above media release...

Asylum seekers in Australia who have not yet had their protection claims decided have no access to Centrelink benefits.'

Notice they are saying Centrelink. I wonder what the cost is to other Government Departments. If all govt dept spending was added up, then what would it be. That is never published or detailed.

so lets add a bit of the road funding, bit of the health budget, bit of the infrastruture spending or any other bit of money and you can make all costing seem as they would be to best suit your agenda . Life is too short to worry about things outside our direct control.

If life's too short to worry about things outside our direct control, it's not long enough to fix them.

I think your right the costs to centrelink are only the tip of the iceburg, I read somewhere quite recently that detention and transport and even some of the housing for boaties comes from the defence budget ( not a small amount either ) because its using defence assetts they have to maintain and supply infastructure for it.

What about immigration. I wonder what they hand out. Thats what I was getting at PeterS. Thinking more along the lines of direct help rather than infrastructure costs. If you start thinking about infrastructure the mind boggles.

I'm closing this down now before we stray into a big political debate.  Thanks everybody.
