free camping

Hi, read article about free camping at Wilks Pk, Wagga Wagga and other towns considering this also. It is my opinion, they can shut it down, put limits on, whatever. It is the businesses in that town that will miss out because people at the free camp won't go to the caravan park if they don't want to, they will just pass the whole town and then everyone misses out.. they are free camping for a reason and that's usually financial. just my opinion and could not email to editor. what do you think? rocket n strop

seems a lot of councils only take much notice of one type of business in their areas (caravan parks) as they dont take much notice of the cost to other businesses in town and its these ones that will loose out when they close free-camp sites, and I agree those that stay at free camps near towns do it for financial reasons, just like I am about to start doing.

Hope I haven't left my decision to give free-camping a go too late

If the free camp is within 10kms of town it may be a relevant issue.
If the caravan parks are operating at a loss, with lots of empty sites all the time, then it might be an issue.
Some people free camp for budget reasons, while others just prefer the quieter, decentralised atmosphere away from town.
It's time the Councils and town caravan parks learn to balance these aspects of travel and camping. When the caravan parks are running a maximum capacity and the overflow chooses to free camp near the town, the town needs to look at accommodation availability. Or are the parks just being greedy wanting a monopoly?
Ultimately the town gets the benefits through visitors refuelling, shopping, eating etc.
I don't know the camp, but the same principal applies as far as business is concerned.

The shires and councils that close down the low cost camp sites will soon find that us travellers will largely bypass those towns and the rest of the towns traders all suffer. The van parks that are whinging should have a look at the way they do business and think how they can adapt to meet the needs of the travelling public.
