Took the advice from many of you, and instead of Perth To Cairns, we are now doing Melbourne to Cairns. Mainly following the coastal route, with detours to the Blue Mountains, Armidale and up towards Paluma. Arriving Cairns on the 30th April. We pick up the van and plan to head down to Phillip Island, see the penguins. Then Wilsons Promintory, hopefully more wildlife. Then Ninety Mile Beach/Lakes Entrance and then Mallacoota.
Beyond that, we have yet to decide. Any information you have on campsites/wild camping sites in the proximity of those areas would be much appreciated.
Hi Rob, you have picked a very nice part of this great country of ours to start your journey, all of Gippsland is great, I live in Wonthaggi so if passing through this way give me a pm. I will be in Townsville 20-25 April so you might be around that area as well. I am going up the middle and coming back the coast 11/4-end May. I hope you enjoy the penguins. Re Lakes Entrance, there is a lovely caravan park at Lake Tyers opposite the Tavern and the Tavern is great too they have the best squid ever and it's the real thing not just the scrapings off the floor. There is another park just up the road and that too is nice but a liitle on the costly side. I think the managers are members on here. I also notice you have 9 posts but don't remember seeing you here so if I haven't welcomed you, WELCOME, enjoy.

There is a free camp at Genoa, about 100 yards or so past the Mallacoota turn off, over the bridge and turn left. Has flush toilets that are cleaned every day and the sites are nice and grassy.
As you go up the coast there is a great camp at North Head at Moruya (follow the signs after you cross the bridge and turn right to the airport) it is $10 pn if you are on a pension. Flush and long drop loos and drinking water. River on one side and ocean on the other. We spend lots of time there when we are not on a big trip. Good fishing off the breakwall.
We leave Melbourne about the same time as you and heading in the same direction towards home.
If you are in the Ulladulla area give a yell and I'll put the kettle on, that is of course if you are there before the 15th April as we head off on the half lap that day.
Delmeny Beach camp ground is good and cheap in low season, then there is Berry Showgrounds, very convinient for train trips to Sydney Woolongong etc. Further north Coopernook (free) near Mooreland is good and Ellenbourough(Free) on the Oxley highway out from Wauchope is good
Wilson's Prom is great, well worth a visit, BUT and it's a BIG BUT be aware that in the Prom camping area you will pay at least $50 a night with power, try to find a camp nearby.
