The mind boggles to think we can gobble up all those other countries and still have room for dessert....

To the best of my (limited) knowledge that comparison looks pretty valid.

And we have less than a third of one percent of the world's population!

On just about every official measure of comparative well-being good ol'Assie comes up right near the top of the list! And we still complain!!!

Have a look at which countries are in dire financial straits and compare it to the big one!

My overseas friends ask why we don't travel abroad.

You could do the lot of them before you made a dent in Oz ay. wink

According to that map I travelled from Spain to Poland in a week.
I drove through monsoonal storms in SA and Qld, dry farmland in parts of SA and NSW, floods and green lush country in northern NSW and central Qld. Such a diverse country. Summer one end, and winter the other. Rain and storms on the eastern side, and hot and dry in the west.
The country changes about every 100km, huge flat regions, hilly, steep and windy ranges to reveal yet another beautiful section of country. No wonder we never get sick of travelling it. That's Australia.

No point in travelling overseas if one has no desire to but I believe it is very beneficial to do so. It is a valuable experience to be the foreigner, the one who talks with the strange accent, in some cases looks different and speaks a foreign language. We become more understanding and less xenophobic for the experience.

It gives us a better perspective of where we really stand on the world stage, being only one and a half percent of the world's economy and a third of one percent of its population. We do not get much coverage in the world media mainly because, as travel writer Bill Bryson has pointed out, "We behave ourselves" (we don't start wars or stage revolutions)

While there is some wonderful sight-seeing in this country (our beaches are without equal) other places also have some truly awesome scenery, USA for example with its Alaskan wilderness, the thermal regions of Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, the gobsmacking beauty of Yosemite, the majesty of the Grand Tetons, to name just a few.

That said, I point out that I'm as proud an Australian as any member of this forum.

You're right Jim, I appreciate Australia much more after only a couple of forays into the Great Overseas. Staying here now though.

Right on cue Gert!... I deliberately left that out to give the opportunity to someone else to make that very valid point!

There is another one of these postcards - showing the USA inside Oz - mindboggling when you think fo the kilometres we travel, with sometimes nothing as far as the eye can see -
stood on top of mountains and not seen any sort of habitation at all - just land neverending! Love it!

One day maybe I would travel abroad but to be honest, I have no real desire.

I have only just started looking around Oz and I have so much of that I want to see first.

Jon, that describes it perfectly. smilesmile
