Have been to St George twice ... both times stayed at the van park on the western entrance to the town - on the left as you enter heading east. A good place, not very big, on the banks of the river, grassy sites. I have only been passing through - last year I voted in St George for the Fed Election (waste of time that ) ... and this year I just had to pick up some letters at the PO.
However, if you are heading south from St George the Nindigully Pub is only 70km south. Great place on the grassy banks of the Moonie River - free camp with hot showers. Best meals around - HUGE serves for good prices.
Cheers
John

we camped on the side of the road just outside of st george there were quite a few of us then about at least 8 of us or more from memory we just pulled off the side of the road and lit a fire and all set up camp ,was one of the most memorable nights ,the truck drivers go past and blast there horn ,oh the memories.
Yep we love Nindi too. Been there twice and had a great time. Hot showers toilets etc. Pub meals huge, if you order a Mixed grill ask for 2 knives and forks and share, it's huge. (they won't give you 2 plates)
I suppose it all depends on what you are expecting. Admittedly as each telling goes on it gets embellished and grows and grows.
For us, it is ideal for a stop over on the way through to a friends place further up the track.
Have read your PM Boroma and have replied.
Wouldn't do for us all to like the same spots anyhow, can you imagine how crowded it would be. There was very little room left by 6pm the two nights we were there.

The only expectation I had, was that is would be a nice experience....no different to the way I feel about any other place I have read about or has been suggested to me.
Not at St George but not far from it Bollon.......great spot by the river, plenty of space............
Yes I know that one too Pauline....that was my first ever 'free' camp many, many years ago.
It is again out of our way, it is west and we are heading east.
I also heard that they had stopped the overnight camping on the creek but am not sure if that is true or not.
Might just have to give St George a miss as a possible stopover.
Understand it is out of your way but we were there in late June and they had just put in a fantastic walkway right round the creek and were plenty of vans there, hope it has not changed as it was a beaut spot..............
I just checked Camps6 ... and there is a camp at Westmar which is about 120km east of St George - Site 872.
Camps6 says Rest Area adjacent to pub - lists toilets, showers.
Coordinates are - 27 55 10 S 149 43 05 E. Google Street View doesn't indicate an exact area, but there is a side yard at the pub.
I have not used the place, but if you just want an overnighter (albeit not that close to St George) it probably would do.
Cheers

I just looked at the map John and I gave you a bum steer I am afraid....we are heading south and then east......might just go on to Goondiwindi which is the destination at this point.
I really only want to go to St George to go to the Unique Egg, nothing else.
Will be coming down from Surat which is where we will camp for a day or 2 on the river.

Maybe we are not talking about the same place Pauline....it is on the right opposite the shop, just over the bridge as you come into town from St George??
Done the Unique Egg ... doesn't cost much, not a startling display .... but it is incredible how that old Greek has carved the eggs ... and uses the light display to show them off.
Was in there again about three weeks ago for a what turned out to be a free quick look around. He's a nice bloke - but he can talk more than me (and that's sayin' something )
Cheers

No B this is the town of Bollon, not much there except this great free camp right beside river huge space for vans and apparently free showers and loos in the main street, as I said very small place, but not sure if it was before or after St George, maybe after I think heading west......

Yes I am talking about Bollon....used to be a shop just across the road from the toilets in the main street and Bollon is west of St George.
From what you say, maybe we are talking about 2 separate areas in the town.
The free showers are just up the road a bit from the loos, think there might even be some BBQs there as well but not sure.

We stayed at Westmar a couple of months ago. It is a rest area by the roadside but it is not noisy. There are hot showers and toilets that are cleaned every day.
The pub has a sort of cabin and van park but you pay for that one.
We stayed three nights on the river at St George. Head down the golf course road over the weir. Past the end of the bitumen and turn right at the fourth cattle grid. Only suitable for a four wheel drive. Great spot, quiet, no fish, no yabbies, a few shrimps
