His first c/van trip

I am feeling a little apprehensive.Im going to Yarrawonga this weekend with my 2 Jack russells. It will be Eddie"s 1st trip in the caravan,I have introduced him to the van in the driveway and he seems ok.I have bought a fold up fence for both dogs to be enclosed and I give them plenty of attention. Jaqui has been on many trips and is usually good, maybe its me over reacting...wish me luck

Eddie will probably take his lead from Jaqui, especially if she is calm and happy to be with you.

Take a leash with you also....just in case the pen does not work for him....other than that....RELAX and enjoy your weekend donnybabes.

Cheers B

Hi DB it's good that you have an experienced travel dog and Jacqui will be a great calming influence on Eddie. He will be a cool dude for sure. I assume you will have the area underneath the van blocked off?

I am apprenhensive about travelling with my dogs. One is 11 yrs old and very placid, the other is a boisterous boy nearly 5yo and very intelligent. I am worried about how he will adapt to life on the road but he is gorgeous, not agressive at all and loves meeting new people and animals.

The largest pen I could find was 3 foot high so I hope that works.

Jack Russells are great dogs and very obedient. If you start out with short trips and quiet parks I'm sure Mr Eddie will adapt very quickly.

I have the pet enclosure thats over 3 mtrs long and 80cm high I use it across my drive way and they have not jumped it "yet". I also have a skirt for the bottom of the van. I am getting dog training organised for him,in fact they are coming tommorrow to see him in the home enviroment. Then they decide what type of training to give him.

Where did you get your fence from for your kids,  it looks like we will have to make our own out of fly screen doors.  Hope the training goes well.

I got my dog pen off ebay - I bought 3 of them so I can make a fairly big area for the dogs. They come in sets of 8 panels 60cm per panel wide so each pen is 4.8 linear metres. They interlock and fold up and don't weigh much. As I said the tallest I could get was 90cm so it should be ok. My dogs will never be out unsupervised. You can pick up the shorter pens for around $45 and I think they are a good investment - more convenient that mucking around with screen doors and very easy to fold away and set up.

Wow, a personal trainer for the dogs DB - when we meet up on the road I will expect to see two paragons of virtue.

Good idea if your dog can be tethered without any issues Sheba.  One of mine tethers ok but the other does not.

Fair enough Boroma.  Hadn't thought of that.  Though it was just another option, as Pens take up space and add weight.

Cheers,

Sheba.

RE:pens for kids

I got mine from Bendigo market $45. A good investment due to the owner of the front unit putting snail bait down,I wont let the dogs wander down the driveway.By placing it across the driveway they are secure and close to me when im doing things out the front.

Both The Warehouse and Crazy Clarks sell the portable folding dog pens.   Forget the price now.  I think they were around $39.99 at the time.   I bought a couple so that I could join them to make a reasonable "run" area, then never used them.

My "Kids" won't get out of the 'Van unless I do, and if I'm not going anywhere, they want to get back in on the bed.  [I've only got one now.]

Cheers,

Sheba.

I have a pen and think its the best thing I've got for the dogs, as felt safer that other dogs/kids just couldn't just go straight up to them and cause to much trouble, I'm never far away from them anyway but if I'm asleep in van they can sit outside and watch the world go by etc if they want, will try and put up a photo to give you basic idea of what mine looks like

Honi, Can I ask again where did you get that entry tent. I know you have said in the past, Was it BCF or Rays Outdoors. And do you remember how much you paid for it.. Where do you store it in the van.
I'm thinking it may be a cheaper option for me. Thanks.

Hi Marg, I brought that one at BCF, cost me about $170 this one just pops up like an umbrella, there is a cheaper one which is pretty good also, just takes a little longer (but still quick setup) for around $50 but not sure if they had the 3 sides, they roll up small and store it in the pvc pipe at the front. I have also seen something similar at raysoutdoors for about $80, I just liked this one as its just so easy, pull it out of the bag, and pop it up and jobs done basically.. it does have suction cups to stick to side of van but I've made a couple of tie down points as don't trust suction cups on windy day..3 sides roll up and down for privacy if needed. hope that helps..

I like the one where you have the dogs in the picture better. It has a better look about it.

That's a great set up Honi. How high is your pen? I'm a little worried mine might be too low (900cm) but it was the highest I could find and I can always combine with tethers if there is a concern. The main thing is to have a barrier as a deterrent and as you noted, especially for children as they need to learn about dog territory stuff. My dogs love kids but not all do.

Hi Elle,
You and the babies will be fine as long as you relax, as they usually take their cue from you.
You have done all you need to and are well prepared- certainly you have all that we take along. Leads, pen, tie-out stuff.........all there. However, we also take "mr squirty" - plain old spray bottle filled with water- and a quck squirt stops excited behaviour !

Our pen came from deals direct, and as you see from the pic below, is enough for 2 poodles and the kid from the next van -lol. Has a gate and is high enough to stop jumping out.

We have two of these pens which join together and we erect them under our awning to create quite a large area for our four girls to camp in during the day. I use a piece of 500mm high plastic trellis mesh along the side of the van to stop them wandering under the van and pin it all together. I carry the pens on top of of the Cruiser.

I think the playpen might be the go.  I never thought  of children coming up to the dogs etc durrrr,   three of my girls like kids, but the tibetan spaniel cant stand little people.   So back to the drawing board,  the playpen looks good,  and will get mouth guards for them as well, so they dont eat any nasty bait when we travel.

Hey Spook welcome to the forum in case no one else has said so. Yep your play pen is what I bought and I got 3 of them and will take on board your idea of plastic mesh along the van.

Lynette mate you have had a new hairdo and are looking very snazzy.

Rosie, my boofy boy is a Portuguese water dog and loves squirts so I will just have to practice my very stern growly voice.

Spook, tell us a bit about yourself and what your plans are and most importantly, your 4 girls.

Have a look at dogzonline, they have links to many doggy shops. I have just travelled 14000kms with my kids and have had a ball.

Yes I admire you Allara - 4 largish dogs are a handful but I bet you had them trained really well. Mine are excellently behaved by themselves but put the two together and they turn into hoons but I am slowly erradicating that. One of them is getting too old in anycase to be too naughty.

This is our fence that we used last trip, plastic garden trellis with electric fence posts ( no it's not electrified ). It worked fine & very light, cheap & easy to erect. It was a rush job & we will finetune it for next time but it was very good.

Hehe...I tried that method but I have one little bugger who is able to climb that stuff, hence the bought panels.

looks like a good setup, but like spook I also have a pretty good escape artist, but your setup would be much lighter like you said, and definately more room ... I like it.

Yeah, tried that. One could jump... maybe bigger than yours. ..... but I felt like I was in a cage too, kept visitors out and that wasn't what we wanted.

How did you block off under the van?
