Charlie is my baby and I would love nothing beter than to travel with him but he loves his freedom around the house and I would be so worried we'd loose him when out and about... a friend said she would look after him for the year we'll be away.. but as the time gets closer to us leaving the more I worry about Charlie and how he'll react... anyway I thought I would post some pics of my bub....
His history is ... came to me when rejected by his parents (I handraise orphans).. but as he grew we became more and more connected to him, funny how some simply steel your hearts.. he surely did of everyone who has met him. He is not a year old yet and very much part of our family, he's talkin up a storm, into everything and even throws one or two tantrums now and then as all kids do!! He tries to play with the dog (peke) who runs away not knowing what it is trying to get his attention! Well here are a few photos :)
I never took a first photo of Charlie until I knew he was going to live... he was so very ill when he first got here that I really thought the worst... it took 12 hours to correct his temprature which is too long normally for a tiny bird... after a few weeks I decided that the little begga was tenacious to say the least so I took this photo for his first... a much healthier looking bird indeed.

im his own teddy to cuddle up to .. he still has it too Teddy stays in Charlies bed and if anyone take him out Charlie will pick up Ted and put him back to bed roflolololol Here is is posing for the camera
Still sleeping and playing with his Teddy but now he's inside a carry box no longer a tissue box.. this is his bed and still is for night time sleeps... he loves his bed... he calls out if he is up for too long and its getting dark... puts himself to bed! roflol
He knows what a spoon is for at meal times and will bring it to me when he is hungry and wants to be fed.... not that he could feed himself perfectly well.. I think he just loves the attention!
That is just beautiful AJ. He is gorgeous, those colours!! Haven't seen those colours before, I don't think so anyway. I know how you would feel leaving him behind, but what would be best, that is the question.
He is an olive so you might not have seen his colors before, lots of people comment on his colors :) And yes, I sorta know its best for him to stay but then I'm worried about any seperation anxiety for him n me!!! roflololololololol Linda was around yesterday to play with him again, she has been coming often to let him get used to her for this trip and soon we will go on a short trip for about a week to see if we have everything working properly, or to make lists of what we need or what we need to leave behind so we shall see how he goes for that.
prolly not but it will give us an idea of how the solar/battery set up is working... which is what hubby wants to do... in my case a short trip is just what the doctor ordered... I know we could do that at home but........... going away seems oh so much better!
Wow!!! I didn't know there were so many different Mutations etc. these days. [I googled.]
He sure is cute AJ. Hope he doesn't fret too much. Couldn't you keep his wings clipped, so that he can't fly ? And have a cage for when you had him outside? Of course you'd have to watch out for him being underfoot inside.
Hi AmandaJayne..thanks for your welcome on the photo thread!! We traveled from Cairns to Tassie early this year with our middle aged ****atiel...I was worried that she would stress as she's never travelled further than a klm or two before and is a bit of a nervous nellie....much to my suprise she LOVED it, spent all her time chattering happily to herself and looking out the window...got very excited when she heard wild ****atiels, she is a cage bird (I would love to have her free but she's never been loose) so escaping wasn't a problem. I'm sure she wants to go again, whenever we get ready to go out she gets all excited, something she never did before! Your Charlie is beautiful, if you could figure out a way to keep him safe I'm sure he'd love it!
you got her into Tassie? I was told they dont allow birds in there, its one of the reasons we might not take Charlie with us... was also told we cant take him into national parks... its because of these limitations we are getting a 'sitter' for Charlie..... His cage is rather large too and he is not used to being caged all day so will want his freedom, I dont think hubby fancies the idea of Charlie leaving big wet areas on his bed! I'm still undecided as to what to do.... when we go on our short trip I'll see how Charlies goes.. we can also take him on a trip .. we have till next year... he is my baby tho.... more so than any of the other critters..
Love the new Avatar AJ. Reminds me of a Swamp Wallaby I reared years ago. She was Hairless when I got her too. Her mother had tipped her out of the pouch during a bushfire. I used to take her shopping strapped to my waist in a peg-bag type pouch. [See Pic.]
She loved it. Used to pop her head out sniffing all the different smells.
Old people would come up and tell me how they used to raise them, and compare methods of feeding etc.
Used to take a loooong time to complete the shopping believe me.
Only Pics. I have left. She's about half-grown here.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I've raised lots n lots of critters over the years.... used to go shopping with them too if I was out all day altho not that small.. the small ones I put on a warmer pad to keep thier temps right... but as soon as the fluff turns up they would go with me... backpacks were good (breathable ones).. the funny looks I would get when the bag started moving LOLOLOLOL and the ooo and ahhhs when they checked me bags... I'd have them for 6mths to 12 mths... then they would go to a 'halfway farm' to get used to the openess... then out from there again... its a long process.. and everytime it would be time for one to leave me I would cry buckets!!! (I'd miss em)....
I will put up some photos of the possums too soon :)

Hey what a beautiful baby boy and what a great job you did raring him. I reckon you could very successfully adapt him to travelling with you and to a smaller cage. I also think you could help him adapt to 1 or 2 or 3 different minders so that you can go travellling without him.
It's my uninformed opinion that he may be happier staying in one place with a few trusted friends that you introduce him to. And you could come back and visit him in between trips and he would remember you.
But that is just a feeling .
What a fantastic job you did in ensuring he survived.
Geez people are full of misinformation...I think you can bring any pet bird in to Tassie. With 'native birds' (even if they have been aviary bred for generations like our ****atiel)you have to fill in an 'import form'...if my memory is correct we got our permit paperwork from Tassie parks and wildlife. They posted the form to us in Cairns before we left & then we just handed it in to the Quarantine people in Devonport...it doesn't cost anything, I don't really see the point of it but you know how the government loves red tape! Don't bring bird seed tho'...they made us chuck ours out, even tho' it's the exact same stuff sold in Tassie supermarkets!!
