lng conversion for 202 holden red motor

Just come back from my first trip in the hj motorhome and getting 6 klms to the liter. Is this good or should I look at converting it to dual fuel. It had gas on this engine before I bought it but was taken off the vehicle. What sort of fuel consumption do you get on gas? I would apreciate some help. Thanks, Bill

Going gas would be a good move. Land cruisers on gas are more economical than the diesel models so you should get similar savings.

However I suggest you go LPG and not LNG.

With gas Bill you would get a bit less on the economy side but it's cheaper to buy, the other thing to look at is the availability and prices where you want to go...

Hi Bill
Thats not to bad but you could get a little better point and timing are one to watch as the old holden motor is known to be hard on points always use venterlated point they run cooler. If timming and or point gap is not correct this will also add to higher fuel consumption as well as fuel mixture not set up correctly, Or replace points with a electronic pointless system. Lpg is good but have it set up with duel set up so that if lpg is not available your not stuck and you also need to change spark plugs to 1 range cooler when running lpg. I highly recommend if you want the most for your dollar have it set up by a good dyno tune opperator.

I hope this helps if you need anymore help just drop me a line

I run gas for a number of years on my van, burns a lot cleaner, very hard to set to get the best of petrol and gas, more economic than petrol, extremely senative to timing. The holden will need a lube system fitted. Also pays to run regularly on petrol to avoid trouble with fuel drying out in the carbie. Just my take on lpg. Also spent a number of years as a mechanic working on industrial powered machines like forklifts

Thanks, people.I already have a valve additive system fitted, and the car had gas before. I am trying to get the prior owner to refit the system as it would suit the 202.Does anybody know how mant klms to the liter on gas?

6 km/L  equates to 16.6L/100k in my language.

That seems OK.  But of course it depends on the weight etc of the motorhome & driving habits.

I would be looking at the cost of converting (back?) to dual fuel as compared to the possible savings in gas costs even with probable increased consumption.  Consider also that the Govt's policy is to gradually increase excise on gas, over time.

How many Kms need you drive to recoup the conversion outlay factoring in the variables.

Will resale value or resalability be improved?

Buggared if I know.

I think it will definately improve the resale value, and extend the range of the vehicle. It all depends on how much I want to spend. Townsvillegas installers want $3000 to $6000 to install a new sysem, with govt rebate of $1250 , so I am looking at less expensive avenues. The vehicle weights 2.6 tons , loaded, so 6klms is not to bad , but gas , here is 85c a liter , so I will have to do the sums, and see. Thanks Bill

I;m with cupie on this one.

One other thought is that if you are NOT a hard driver & prepared to just take it easy , then you may be able to down size the jets in the carby, reducing the amount of fuel going into the motor. This would cost you next to nothing to try & if not satisfactory then you have not lost much.

When you say more economic on gas do you mean price wise as I've always found L/100km is never as good as petrol... And that is with the dizzy strobed for gas and a tune on a Dyno...

The old 202 motors were never known for their economy they come from an age when fuel was a fraction of the price it is now. If you intend keeping it then look at updating the motor even to a V6 but check with an authorized auto engineer to see if it can be done without a lot of structural change to the engine gear box mounting positions. may even pay to take the MH body off and slip it onto a commercial ute body Be careful not to over capitalize the project as you need to think resale down the track

Yes, dollar wise, less km per litre than petrol
