ATHERTON TABLELANDS

Hi all!

Well, I've finally stopped long enough to have a browse on here and let you all know I'm safe and well.

I arrived at my friends place in Malanda on Thursday, after 2 weeks on the road from home. (Logan City Q)

There was a yummy roast pork awaiting me! Alas, it wasn't a welcome dinner for me but a family farewell dinner for her son going back to Uni. Nevertheless, it was very welcome.

It's been 'mizzling' here ever since I arrived, but apparently it's clearing for sunny but cold weather. brrr! hmm...mizzle or cold?

I'll probably spend a week or so here.

Take a trip out to Koombooloomba Dam if you haven't been out there before Beth. Very pretty drive & plently of free camping spots, but take your own firewood.
It's at its best on a fine & sunny day & can be really miserable when raining or windy.
I camped there for a week last time I went up & throughly enjoyed the place, & the visitors, but the weather was kind then.

Ooh, the memories of the local cheese and chocolate is causing the drool to much up my key pad. Yum! Yum! Yum!
Pricey but tasty and well worth the investment in a small sample just for the experience.
Enjoy!

Thanks all for the welcome comments.

For some strange reason it's always wetter in Malanda than Atherton. Mareeba is warmer again.

So today we went for a family day out to Granite Gorge. It was lovely and warm and sunny. There's granite boulders of varying sizes which little rock wallabies scamper all over.

My friends house has a wood fire so it's nice and cozy inside tonight.

Jonathan, are you still in Mareeba showgrounds?

Dougie, I'll have to ask my friends s-i-l about Koombaloomba Dam. He goes camping all the time.

CG, yes I totally agree. I had a taste of them at the markets on another trip, but haven't been to the factory.

I've visited a lot of places on previous trips, but up there would be the organic dairy near Mungali Falls, and Lake Bareen.

I think the song goes "If I'd knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake"......Just joking wink

Glad you are having a good time Beth, how are the improvements to the trailer going?

I love Atherton Tablelands, been a long time since I've been there.  And Malanda Milk, none better in the country!

Hi Vic,

Yes, the fridge has worked out very well. I've got the nack of changing it over to gas when I stop. As someone said on here, it runs colder on gas, so I turn the thermostat down, and turn it back up while it's running on the car.

Gypsy's roof isn't waterproof, and so far I've travelled with friends, who helped me put the tarp over the roof. But I can see it being a tricky job when I'm alone.

So tomorrow I'm taking her over to a canvas place at Mareeba to see if it can be waterproofed, so I can do away with the tarp.

Jon, we have a few things to do tomorrow in Atherton before coming over to Mareeba, so I'll see how we go for time...we may pop in to say hi.

Today I met HeadnHome (Honi). We had a good chat and I found her to be a lovely lady.

Hi Beth ..

Had a few jobs done by "Taylors" at Mareeba .. and quite happy with their work too. All in good time Beth .. If I miss you this time, I'll catch you another.

I will be about tomorrow .. and its quite  likely I might also catch up with "HeadnHome" when I start moving out of here after the Rodeo ..

Jon

It was great to put face to name today Beth, first impression is you'd be alot of fun to have around!! If I wasn't working full time, would love to hit the road and meet up somewhere, enjoy the rest of your stay, and maybe see you again before you head off.

He says it's made out of nylon, so not sure the waterproofing will work. I didn't know what it was,, thought maybe vinyl.

Anyway, he's going to give it a go, and we'll come back from Cairns via Mareeba on Thursday arvo to collect her.

We're still working on that info for you. I'll get back to you on that.

It should'nt make much difference what the material actually is .. its mainly the contact cement or glue that is used to bind the two together that is important .. it must be equally as effective on both materials ..

Still .. I'm sure they have a better idea of what they're doing than I have ..
