Waving

Are there any wavers out there? A few years ago when I travelled round Aus with my pre school kids I put a little book and a game together called The Desert Wave.

I am now in the process of updating it all and I wondered how many other people have a favourite wave.

Regards Shaun

I invented the game to give me and the wife a break from The Wiggles - we scored points for the type of wave we recieved ie Umpire - Double Umpire - Indian Chief.

The kids loved it.

I like the "ONE FINGER WAVE" - friends bought one of those wavy hand things and stuck it on the dashboard - waved constantly - ha,ha!

We noticed more people wave on the Newell Hwy then on the Hume.
We reckon we got less waves from folk with full vans pulled by Pajeros.
We reckon we get most waves from drivers with poptops pulled by non-SUVs.
We got no waves from Winnebago drivers.

Not exhaustive research, put lets see.

That's pretty close to what we found as well...did you have a wave you prefer?

Up the top end we found quite a few "aircraft controllers"...the one thumb straight out.

Of course double waves are a rare treat. If any one wants a copy of the book/game send me a note and I'll post you one shaunfay@ig3.com.au

I have a special wave for my granddaughter. One finger fairy kiss blown and then circles in the air, also with one finger (pointer not middle :]). The grandsons who are older get a full hand with similar actions. They think it's great.

I have found on country roads just about every one waves.
Actually last week driving up the road towards Alice The Boss and I were talking about waves and we came
to the conclusion, Motor Homes usually wave to Motor Homes,
Camper trailers hardly ever wave
and caravans wave to caravans.
I give the finger lift off the steering wheel to everyone.
What I have found tho a wave is a bit like a smile and a hello, give one and most times you get one back.
OH btw I drive a Pajero with a full van and wave to anyone.

Well, we give the double person full hand wave to everyone.  That is I wave, he waves and we found that the earlier in the morning the less waves you receive in return.

I generally give a wave to any one that looks like they are enjoying life, be it a beat up kombi with art work or a 5th wheeler, My wave is a generally acknowledgement by a lift of the finger but I often feel like lifting the hand off the wheel, rotating the hand and making the finger fully extended vertically
cheers

Out here (The great North highway) almost everybody waves. But on the rougher side-roads its a one-finger wave cos the drive cant take his hands off the wheel and the windscreen is so dusty the passenger cant see!

You picked it Gerty. That pretty much sums up my experiences as well. The further from the city, the bigger the wave.
I find truck drivers usually wave. Some even have a chat on the 2-way.
I generally wave with the 2 finger "peace" style. If I'm on the job I point 2 fingers towards the opposite fog line to let them know they have to move over for the oversize load.
The bigger motorhomes do not wave, yet if you meet them in the park they are usually very friendly. Maybe we should take the opportunity to explain the "waving rule".
Welcome to the forum Shaun. You've started with a great topical topic. Safe and happy travels.

I do the peace symbol wave most times but sometimes just for fun we do really weird waves just to give the passing nomads a laugh or something to talk about. The upside down hand dangling wave is one of my favorites or, maybe the maniacal head & hands (hylda does the 2 hands I only do the one for obvious safety reasons) up against the windscreen waving madly or,  maybe even the black power salute for something different (don't think I would do that one in America though).

Anything for a laugh on those long trips from A to B

You sound like a "double happy" - quite rare in The Desert Wave game- worth 20 points.

Love the "upside down dangler"

Ummmmm.........have you cleared this with Cindy (GN Owner/Webmaster) she has a policy of no advertising on the forum without her permission, you can pm her or on the front page of GN there is a contact number, might be wise to do so if you haven't already.

Ok will do...but as there are only a handful of these books left I was not going to retire on it espceially at $6 as that really only covers my postage- but will check it out.

Management and I do a synchronised wave... on the count of one, two three, she waves both hands left right left and I wave the hand I am not steering with in synchro with her.... it really cracks people up... we only do that though when we are bored....
