Hi, we have spent several months in the mildura area at different times and are thinking of buying a home there to retire into( or use as a base) Does anyone have any opinions on this plan? we would like to hear them, either pro or con.
Only stayed there on our travels Tezza, the bakery cafe in town is to die for, we like the place but don't know a lot about it.
Was it your managing the CP at Mukinbudin? If so, are you going to be there for awhile or are you moving on soon? We were hoping to catch up there around August but whatever your plans are, good luck Mildura sounds nice.

We really like Mildura, but unfortunately like many other nice spots around the country they are too far from a major surgical Hospital with all the modern departments.
We believe that as one gets older you'll find that being able to receive emergency and ongoing specialist care can became a matter of life and death. Literally.
When we were looking for a place to retire we found our 'Paradise' on the south coast of NSW, but on enquiring about medical care were told there is a nice little medical centre in town and a hospital at Batemans Bay. However the nearest Coronary care and surgical unit was in Canberra. That's a long way if your having a heart attack.
After weighing up the pro's and con's we chose a small town close to a magor city hospital with a number of private surgical hospitals with all the modern facilities. Our choice was Bittern (Hastings) on the Mornington Penisula close to Frankston (Melbourne).

I have to endorse John's comments. My Parents retired to Nelson Bay, north of Newcastle, and the distance from major medical facilities (about 60km) became a major headache in their twilight years.
Tezza, We have lived there for 37 years and could live almost anywhere in oz.. Its the best little place ,close to big citys and the medi centres are one of the quickes there is.. You dont have to wait for months to get anything looked at.. Go for it ,its one of the fastest growing places there is , how do I know this , My son is a manager of a concret supplyer, My brother inlaw is big builder..
Just a clean and open place, and its flat, can ride a bike any where..... Good place to have a home base..you can go n,s,e,or w. on good roads..... do I seem a bit one sided...???????

Although its been very wet the last 2 years, I just wonder about the long term viability of all the Murray river towns, how much they can survive if irrigation is cut back.
