Esmeralda

I got a phone call from the insurance company today telling me that they had approved the claims for Esmeralda's repairs.  The man told me that they had almost decided to write her off!!!!  The repairer is going to remove the awning altogether (I will use the annexe which looks like it has never been used) and make good the damage and on the driver's side they will repair the smallish ding where someone has caused some damage and not left a note.furious

I cannot believe the price of caravan repairsno - over $6K without the awning and around $8K if I had decided I wanted a replacement!!  I'm sure the insurers would have written Esmeralda off if I hadn't decided to use the annexe insteaddisbelief  But the insurers were not at all surprised, apparently it is to do with the price of aluminium, etc.

Thats food for thought. They would write her off for $8,000. I find that surprising. I bet you have her insured for more than that. Makes you wonder if we insure our vehicles for far too much if they write them off that low. Or am I looking at this from the wrong angle.

You will find that if you want to buy an awning yourself the price would be much cheaper than that quoted by the insurance . Once insurers get involved the repairers pad the quote out. Just like windscreens less than half if you pay for it yourself was quoted 600 through insurance 295 if I pay for it .

Insurance is a necessary evil. Mate insured his van in April, wrote it off in the May and got around half of the insured figure . One would think the agreed figure should run through to the next renewal , Surprise Surprise ! it doesn't and no one can satisfactorily explain WHY.

Would be interesting to see what the labour content of the bill is, probably a major part of it.

True wombat 280. The ironman 4x4 awning I'm looking at is only around 400.00

Yes, she is insured for more than that.

It was a second hand awning when I bought the van - cost me $300 installed.
