How big a van can I tow?

I have a 3ltr diesel hilux, and it says that I have a 1.5ton towing limit on the hayman reese towbar- How big a van is that?I would like something about 15ft , or there abouts.I would apreciate your views.

your van must wieght over GVM 1.5t, so your tare will be around 1100kgs

1500 kg seems a bit on the light side so maybe there's a heavy duty towbar available that could replace it if you're concerned about it. I would think that a 15 footer would come in at around that weight so it could well be ok. The ATM (or GVM) is stamped on the compliance plate of the van and is also on the rego papers (in NSW at least, I would think eleswhere too)

HR do make both light duty and H Duty towbars Why ????? . Had a 1600 kg on the Outback so had it up graded to the 200 Kg model the only diff was the actual tow tongue receiver up graded from 40mm to 50mm the bar looks exactly the same under the car from what I could see just costs a hell of a lot more .

HR make light and heavy duty tow bars. Most punters only want to tow a box trailer. It is senseless buying the heavy duty bar if you are not going to tow a van.

Bill don't worry too much about the length of the van. Different vans have different weights for a given length. Look for a compliance plate if the van has been built after1988. If the van has an ATM of 1500 kg or less then put it on your list of possibilities. If not then don't walk away, change your tow bar for a heavier duty one. No sense passing up a good van.

If the van is a pre '88 one then look for the tare weight anything under 1200 kg will not need a change of tow bar.

Change the tow bar for a heavy duty hitch recever such as a HR and the tow weight increases to 2250Kg which will give you a wider option of van sizes to choose from.
