I need to have a whinge so thought I'd do it here.
I know a lot of people think fb is bad, but if one is careful about security and not adding too much info, it's fine. I keep in touch with my many cousins around our country, and at the moment my son Rob is travelling in Vietnam, and it's the easiest way to see where he is and what he's doing.
So, to my whinge...fb asked me for an alternate email address, which I added. I then changed my mind thinking,, no I'm not going to give them any more info,,so I deleted it. It had a spack attack and thought it was a security breech, and it blocked my account. I then had to send them photo ID,,with just my photo and name showing,,to prove I was me,,,and 3 days later, I'm still waiting for a reply or access to my account!
In the meantime, my eldest son Dan rang me to tell me not to panic, but Rob has cut his foot open in Vietnam. He assures me he's okay..he had a first aid kit with him, a mate and a guide. The mate cleaned up his wound and off to the local hospital they went, with the guide as interpreter. He got several stitches in his foot and they've given him IV antibiotics, and generally looked after him very well. Apparently all this is on facebook and I can't see any of it or 'talk' to Rob. I'm getting all my info second hand.
The last I heard yesterday was that Rob wanted to get going,,,the hospital wanted him to stay for a couple of days,,,but they were riding scooters, so he may have had a problem with that. I'm hoping he gave up on the scooter and got the train back to Hanoi, but still waiting for news.
I understand what you mean abiout the ease of keeping in touch with people through fb, Beth. But I'm suspicious of the whole thing... for example why did they want you give an alternate e-mail address? I just dont feel that security is garanteed with fb.
Could you re-register with a slightly different name plus a yahoo or gmail address? I'm sure lotsa people do that.
Good luck to your son in Vietnam... interestingly when a friend travelled in China she wasnt able to access fb at all.
Yes, I could re register, but I have lots of photo's of my trips on that account, and I'd also have to 'find' all my contacts again.
My older son is the most suspicious person around where security is concerned. And he's still on fb.
Mine is marked for friends only to view, I don't have my birth date on there, I don't even have my full legal name on there. I don't befriend anyone I don't know or is a relative. The under 20-25's give it a bad name, in my opinion. I know of several who befriend every Tom, Dick and Harry. They have no privacy screening on their account and say the most outrageous things on there. I've deleted a few young rellies for that reason.
I have a facebook account and use it to keep in touch with friends and family. Will do so more when travelling so they all know where I have got to. Can't understand why they would ask for an alternate email address. I never have. I never go into any of those applications or connect to anyone I think dubious. You can change your security by changing a part of the url address, not sure which way, would have to go back into it to see.
If they are blocking you out Beth, are you still able to contact them. I would be harassing them so to speak to get yours up and running as soon as possible. Is there a phone number you can ring to get it fixed faster. Tell them why you want it back on now.
I have a facebook account and have had no problems with it. Have not been asked for an alternative email address. I use hotmail and not my normal everyday email address. I find it is excellent for keeping up with friends and relees overseas, and my family spread out around NSW. I have friends only to view. There are a lot of bad reviews of fb but so far so good. I haven't had a problem.

I can't find any other way to contact them than this email address they sent me, Marj. And I've already emailed them twice with no reply.
I think the idea of the alternate email address is if for some reason you can't use that email address. I've heard of others being asked for this. I should have just ignored it.
I never go into any of those other apps either.
Re: too much info asked for, simple solution is just don't give it to them. I've not had problems before.
I just went into their help center to see if maybe I could contact them another way for you, but it says they will not give out any information about an account holder to a 3rd party. So I can't help either. I would email them again on the address they gave you and head it up URGENT !! URGENT!! URGENT!! I need this account opened for family contact now. And then explain why.
To use the secure bit - go to account - account settings - security - and if it says http - change it to https - then save - think those are the right steps.
I have had fb for quite a while - don't have any trouble, never accept anyone I don't know - don't go into applications or play games etc - use the chat section to talk to friends who don't have skype ( on which I only use the "typing" message section - tho have used talk and video with one girlfriend - but not keen on seein me on screen - ha!ha!)
There was a thing on fb the other day re an alternative email address - and I just said no thanks!
Like all things, it is what you make of it I reckon.

Many things you join on the internet want an alternative email address, it's common practice for them to ask. Often people start getting too much spam or change servers so change their email address but forget to tell the online places they have joined so a second address can be handy. If you use the email address of your server like xxx@optus.com.au or xxxx@westnet.com.au then it's always best to have at least one gmail, hotmail or yahoo email. I have 2 backup email accounts & use one for when I'm suspect about giving out an email.
btw it sounds like Facebook is being overly secure from the hoops Beth has to go through.
Cheers
Jon

I don't have a farcebook account or use fb at all but I do have two email addresses. One for general use and one for strictly private use. I never send emails to multiple recipients or that are likely to be be forwarded on from my "private" email address.
As I am not all that 'tech savvy' I stick to just the basics when it comes to using the internet etc. I too have two email adresses - one general and one 'private' - and although thought of using fb when we travel, I decided against it, as I just didn't know enough to chance it, for want of a better way of saying it. However, the thing that rang 'alarm bells' for me when reading your thread Beth, was that you were asked for phot ID - why???? Sorry, but it sounds suss to me.
But am glad to hear that your son is OK.

Thanks Peejay. Because I'd try to delete the other email after it had gone through, thier security picked up that it may be a hacker getting into my account. Hence the need for photo ID. Just the photo and my name. I blacked out the rest of the details. It's actually a good security procedure.

Now all you should do is send an email a day asking them to fix your account. The weekend wouldn't have helped the speed either considering the weekend in America ended sometime Monday afternoon here.
Cheers

i too have facebook ,never had a problem with it i play games the lot but i must say i go into settings and i untick every box i use my hotmail address as my email but i also set the thing to not email me for anything ,i tried to get a friend to get into mine while i was away so she could look something up ,because she was using a diff computer and diff destination it asked her some security questions ,she couldnt get in so that was saying it was pretty secure for me.
like anything hackers are out there everywhere, so dont think facebook is major one ,its no different to any other site than what you choose to share with people if you dont want to share dont either publicise or dont tick the boxes remember when you untick the boxes in settings for notifications press save down the bottom lots of people do that, i also dont have my phone number on it either.
my brother isa very keen poker player so he plays poker on texas holdem and he got done, hes a very cheeky thing and wins all the time even in real life at the gee gees and all, but one person didnt like him in a poker room cos he cleaned up the room so to speak and so this particular person made an email sent it to his hotmail and it said that he had been reported for abuse onfacebook so he clicked on the link , before he clicked on that link he had five million facebook dollars on texas poker, after that he had no account to be able to get into and no more 5 mil, he contacted the ceo of facebook and they gave him his five mil but he couldnt retrieve his profile so he had to make a new one, however he did manage to email the person that did it somehow and said im guessing it was you that took my profile and money, and the person said in one word YUP ,so there you go ,but you see he clicked on an email from facebook that said hed been reported for abuse and he had not been abusive at all, so i would of gone nope not doin that . oh well each to his own, i love it i get on and have a laugh and some of the things people put up are hilarious, although hubby has joined the greenies site on there and hes not a fan of greenies at all and has earned himself a name i believe its tosser on that particular site lol, oh well life goes on hey

Very well said glassies. I feel it's been well worth it for me to be on facebook. I have heaps of cousins, who I've gotten to know a lot better through fb. I was also contacted by a very distant rellie in Canada, and that opened up a whole new branch of the family for my siblings and I.
I often have a good giggle at someones posting. Some cousins are very musical and they'll often put up a line from a song, and then someone else will add the next line. And on it goes. We can also post funny videos, or serious items, like when the floods were on here in SEQ. There were posts about which roads were cut, who needed assistance etc.
oh same here beth we all do that too ill start a song and the person has to fill in the next chorus or line, you can also upload u tube music to it so its great one lady went back into the 60's music one day she put up that many posts i was like ok enough now lol, i am amazed at some of the posts that some people put up and cant believe what some people share with the world but hey that is there choice .
i think its great and no different to any other site they are all dangerous no matter what if you dont know how to set your settings .
I gave up this arvo and started another 'account' with facebook. I thought I might have to use a different name, which I didn't want to do, but that was okay, just had to use a different email account. Then had to go through to find all my contacts again. Once my kids accepted me as a friend,,they better had! ,,I was able to find many contacts easily enough.
Sounds a lot easier than the hassles they were putting you through. How's your son now??
I haven't heard from him personally again, but I've heard he's doing okay. I think he comes home on Sunday. So I'll hear all the nitty gritty then, I guess.
