Looking to fit new tyres to my 3.5 tonn semi off road van. Will be doing Gibb River road as well as other dirt roads. Will need a all terrian tyre, The rim size is 15 inch. Any advice appricated.

Hi Aldo, its a difficult question isnt it? Will the van tyres match the towing vehicle or are they different rim sizes? Apart from comments on this forum you could check out the 4 x 4 forums for info or google all terrain tyre reviews. How much of your average travel will be on dirt roads (including extreme sections)? Matching your tyre pressure for van and tug is very important on the Gibb river road as there have been many rollovers due to drivers ignoring this important area.
hi, a lot of 4x4 forums are using bfg,s and they say that there happy with them. i have tried maxxis, m/t and bfg,s and i do like the maxxi,s but the only thing that concerns me is, if i do a tyre will it be avalible to replace. so now i have just put on tyres on the van that are l/truck and readily avalible regards peter
tyres try an have the same size on tug an van with same rim if possible . if you buy common standard tyres they are eazy to replace if you ruin them in some out of the way place if you have "special" tyres you might have to replace damaged tyres with something that doesn't match or wait while some are sent out from the nearest supplier could take days try running over a lump of metal an get four flats at one time all on one side can't help bad luck but if your wheels match up at least you can get mobile to help yourself past the problem
We did the Gibb River last year, all the way to the Mitchell Falls.
We have BFG's and Sunrasia rims. Never had a problem all the way till off the Gibb River Road and collected a stone through the tyre on a creek crossing.
As Dogbox says, if you try to have them all the same size, you can switch them around.
We met one fellow who had done two tyres on the tug but they didn't match his rig so he had to order one in at a station out there somewhere. $500 for the tyre alone, then had to wait for it to be shipped out there.
Sunrasias are only cheapies so its no sweat to replace one either.

I did the Gibb road in Oct 09 and never had a puncture in my Maxxis 751 Ats. In fact never had a puncture in the maxxi all the way round. My tres are 31+10.5+15 inch, and I would swear by them.It pays to have the same tyres on your van as the car, and light truck tyres are the way to go.

Not only the same tyres but the same stud patten wheels, saves carrying two different spares and that inter cahnges can come in handy at times out in the wilds
