Sorry I can't answer your question with the authority of one who tows with a Challenger, but with a max Tow capacity of 2500Kg and a max Ball weight of 250Kg the 2.5D should be a willing worker.
However considering the overall size of the Challenger I personally think that towing anywhere near the vehicles legal capacity would be pushing the boundry in terms of overall stability and thus safety.
Note: An appropriate WDH must als be used with the Challenger.
Cheers, ozjohn.

Have a look at the Ford Ranger (ours is a four door ute and we put a canopy on it).  We are extremely pleased with the performance and ltrs/100 we get.

Brickie.
I had a love affair with the earlier Kia Sorento until the lastest update.
Now with the lighter maximum Ball weight they have similar restraints as the Hyundai Santa Fe, so they both are unsuitable for my van.
The earlier 2.2D Sorento had a tow capacity of 2800Kg and a max ball weight of 280Kg. 'Fantastic"
The latest 2.2D 'R' has a tow capacity of 2000Kg(Auto) & 2500Kg (Man), but only a piddling 150Kg Max ball weight. These figures are best suited to the euro market.
I instead  finished up with a 18 month old Ford Territory and must say it's the steadiest towing platform I've ever owned, but a bit heavy on juice. The 4.0Lt petrol Territory does however have far superior power and to torque than a 3.0D patrol.
Hopefully the new diesel Territory due for release in May won't be overpriced like the Jap and Euro diesels are. But being Ford, I doubt it very much.
Cheers, ozjohn.

Note: Owners of late model Sorento's may have earlier handbooks supplied with the vehicle and the tow figures listed maybe incorrect.
Check with Kia Australia for correct tow and ball weight figures.

A big thing in favour of the Prado's is their 180 lt fuel tank!

But if we had our time (and money) over again we would seriously consider a ute. With the "station wagon" style of vehicle, especially if you have a luggage barrier, theres not a huge amount of storage space in the back. Also things such jerry cans, gas or butane bottles can be transported more safely on the back of a ute instead of in the cabin with people.

Good luck with your choice Brickies!

Hi Brickies

We are on to our second Navara, dual cab, diesel and the current model is an auto. The ride is probably not as good as what you would get in the Prado or similar, still a good ride though but concur with previous comment on use of space. Fuel consumption is good but towing capacity is a winner for us.

We have one of the new Challengers, LS manual and tow our Outback swan with no problems what so ever. Ours is rated at 2500kg towing capacity as it is a MY10 but the MY11 is now rated at 3000kg. Engine is very economical and I have no doubt will tow a larger van with ease.

Brickies,
No problem, plenty of power. Tows trailer easy at 100kmh, even with cruise on, uses about 14l/100 at that speed and about 15l/100 in a howling gale we copped!
Around town unladen about 9 litres. Engine is very free revving especially around 2000rpm, only doing around 2000-2200 at 100 anyway.
Some other owners have complained about excessive diesel noise but it is really very minimal after owning 2 Tritons and also has had a re-tuning done by Mitsubishi to eliminate it prior to delivery.
regards
Jimsiron

Current models have a  max Tow capacity 3,000 kgs with a max ball weight of 300 kgs.

Just noticed that Jimirons has also mentioned the above figures.

 Hi Jimsiron,

Help Help......CAN anyone HELP.

Have just purchased a new caravan (coromal 667) which is about 2000kg , on the way home from the dealers on the freeway we noticed that it swayed as every truck went past. The van was balanced using a WDH (hayman Reese)  and tyre pressures all good. The tow car is a Mitsubishi  the same as yours. Have you experienced any swaying if so how did you fix the problem? we have towed a pop top of about 1900KG with the challenger for a couple of years with no problems. The dealer suggested that we tighten the chains on the WDH which we did and has made a big improvement. If you or a Grey Nomad members have used a sway bar or have worked out a solution could the please post results. Have also had a suggestion of Air Bag suspension as the challenger is light at the rear end apparently.
