Aussie Post $*(&%((*)%^#!%$&&*

Last week I went to our local post office to put in our redirection form, the lady at the counter said she cannot process the form without a phone number, I told her my phone number was unlisted and nobody gets it, she then asked another employee and she confirmed that no phone number they cannot process, I left the shop, got home phoned 131318 and the lady on the other end was very very helpfull she even phoned the shop that I had been to twice, telling them to look in their AusPost internal web site for this info (she waited while I wrote down every word)

On Aus Posts internal web site: refer Matters

Application can be picked up from any retail outlet or downloaded from AusPost web site it must be logged in person at any AusPost outlet so that the customers ID can be verified.

There is no requirement for the customer to provide a phone number for redirect, it does make it easier to contact the customer if there is an issue arising and is included as a check in the office info only section but, oulets should not reject the application simply for not including a phone number.

I returned to the Post Office and asked if the redirect phone number had been sorted and the lady said oh yes we can now accept it without a phone number.

So if you want to submit a form for redirect to Aussie Post don't let them bully you into thinking that a phone number is required, copy and paste the above and take it to them, I fully understand the need to submit the form in person for ID checks, but for them to try to force a phone number out of me I then saw red *@@*((%#

They say the reason they require a phone is because if anything goes wrong they can contact me, how are they going to contact me if I am away?

Do think it's the power, I think it's matter of standing up for one's right's, I pay for an unlisted number and it is my right to give it to who I wish, I should have put that in the original post.

Dont put too much faith in that redirection process... We used it once when we were away for a month, came home and there was a parcel on the front step, almost buried under dirt and leaves. It must have been there since just after we left, givinging our house that unnocupied look which was what we were trying to avoid. I complained but nobody seemed to care much.

I have used the mail redirection several times now without any major stuff-ups. I nominate my mobile number as I have my mobile with me when I travel. I can only speak from my own experience and others may not have been so fortunate.

Privatisation is the downfall of many things, including customer service.
Everyone just handballs the problem and it's never resolved. It's all about profits and shareholders. To hell with the customers who pay their wages, especially in a monopoly such as Aust Post. Where are you going to go if you're unhappy?
Bring back Supply and Service!

Not sure I entirely aggree with you in this instance, the result I got from customer service was excellant, it was the shop front employee's that did not want to provide the service.

If you are unhappy you ph 131318 and if still not happy ask to speak to a supervisor, I was more than happy with the result of my ph call to them.

The real reason for this topic is to let people know that you do not need a ph number on a redirect application for AusPost.

Australia Post has not been privatised, it is still wholly owned by the Australian government.

Like Wombat, I have been paying for a silent line for years, and it's the best $2.93 a month I have ever spent. Round it off to 10 cents a day, and NO calls from India, NO telemarketers, no charities . . . great value. Cheers, Tony

You can get the same result by signing up to the do not call register , I worked with people who would not give there phone number to their boss has they had a private number and then complain that they never called for overtime when it was pointed out how could be called if we don't have your phone number soon gave their phone number to the boss can't have your cake and eat it

I also refused to give my employer my phone no, but I did NOT complain about getting no calls for overtime, I thought it was more important for me to spend time with my family and not spend all of my life at work, don't get me wrong, I did do overtime if requested.

In regards to the do not call register i have been advised by friends that it does not work, think I will continue with my silent number as I know it does work.

I have had a silent number for the last 20 years and not had any telemarketing calls in that time.  Wouldn't change it for quids.

Some P.O.s are privately owned, but they still have to follow Australia Post guidelines.

My friends own one in North Qld.

I don't understand silent numbers. I don't have one and never get called by telemarketers etc.
Why pay extra for the same service. A neighbour of mine blew her stack the other day at a company who rang her about faulty TV aerials that she wass supposed to have put a complaint in about.. Wanted to know how they got her number, as she hadn't given it out and doesn't give it to anybody.
Why have a b.....y phone then.

Mostly it's a case of security or privacy. Police, for instance, generally have silent numbers. My brother has a silent number to keep certain people from ringing them. The person can choose to give it to certain people, eg: family, but it can't be found in the white pages.

Yes I know that beth, but my sister got a silent number when they moved a few years ago after a very traumatic incident, then their kids went about giving it out to everyone and sundry so it served no purpose.

These are Post Office agencies and have been around "forever" especially in smaller country towns.  Often the local general store was also the PO agency however many traditional country village general stores are are going the way of  the dinosaurs.

All the mail sorting etc is done by Aus Post although they do make extensive use of private contractors for a range of tasks.  The core corporate structure is still government owned.  The purpose of my post was to correct the impression in another post that Aust Post, per se, had been privatised, similar to say Telstra, Qantas, CBA etc etc.

Yep, understood Jim.

And yes, my friends PO is a small country town, but they do the sorting on site.

Redirection of mail only covers enveloped mail, or mail up to a certain weight or dimension - what can be carried by a postie - parcels are usually done by contractors, and there is no prov ision for redicrection of such, as I understand it - I am an old auspost employee - and this was always a frustration for customers.  Not everyone has a neighbour or friend they can call on in these circumstances.
A lot of post office employees are trained "on the job", and learn as they go along - they then learn mistakes or interpretations by others who may or may not have been trained by Australia Post themselves - there is so much to learn, it is very hard to be abreast of everything.
But they do their best.

The "do not call" register works for me - has done ever since it came in - and did you know that you can now put your mobile phone on the register as well - google "do not call register" , and you can nominate more than one phone number there.
re silent numbers - if you buy a raffle ticket do you put your phone number on there?

No. I always use my mobile number, our silent number is for friends, relations and only those people we feel we can trust to do the right thing and not pass it on.

Now I want to know how businesses in Oz and OS get my email address.
I get about 40 junk emails every day from places I've never heard of. Not just the "you've won lottery, but you have to buy a ticket first", or "a distant relative died and left you a bucket of cash, just send your bank details so we can transfer the funds" type of junk email, but medical products including Viagra.
Why the hell would I need Viagra?
This technology is a wonderful thing , when it works, and is not abused by crooks.
I don't have the luxury of a private land line phone these days, but I only give my mobile to necessary business contacts and friends such as GN's and others. I don't get too many cold sell phone calls, but these bl--dy emails really get on my goat.

Granny, does your e-mail address appear on your blog? Have you subscribed to any internet newsletters or groups?

Last year I received a whole bunch of rubbish e-mails after I subscribed to an American health site which sent out weekly information. I finally realised they were usually trying to sell something, unsubscribed, and all other the e-mails stopped.

I know lots of people buy things over the internet, but I sincerely doubt the safety of such transactions. Be very careful who has your e-mail address, and your credit card details!!

I usually use a garbage email account (a webmail account) that I use for registering on sites that are likely to give you grief spam wise. I only use my ISP provided email for friends and family or for business type emails.

Can anyone beat this?
This morning I received a spam email in my junkmail for viagra. I proceeded to block and delete only to be told that it was from an address I had in my contacts, and can't be blocked.
Had another look at it, it was actually from my email address to the same email address. How do they do that? I deleted it but how do I stop that happening again over and above changing my password.

They must read our emails as I get so many which have a persons name from my family or friends included in the junk mail, not always common names either.
