We received an email yesterday that originated from a caravan club, and forwarded on through other channels, that warned/advised toll charges were being given for caravan/trailers etc. and fines were incurred if you didn't pay the toll, and that you have to register them (caravans etc) with GOVIA. We, ourselves checked our GOVIA statement as we travelled over the Gateway and Logan Motorways last Christmas with van in tow - and no extra tolls were taken from our account. I then rang GOVIA to check, and no, you only pay for the vehicle!! They did admit that it is possible that a photo may be taken of the van/trailer, but a simple phone call to them will adjust the situation. It would appear that some people are ignoring the letters they receive and hence get issued these fines, and in turn are causing angst by giving wrong information.
As the saying goes - it's not 'til you know the other side of the situation that the record is set straight.

I also heard theres no provision to register your caravan or trailer in NSW...and the one in Vic .says its..up to you to register...but they take pics of your tow vehicle front plate and check if you have an Etag
its easy to pay Vic tolls. You can prepay for your toll at any post office or online even after you use the road. I think you have 24 or 48 hours to pay the toll

I believe it's the same in Qld. I regularly use the toll road, so set up the system where it does automatic topups from my account. I don't have to think about it..other than make sure there's money in the account.

Now thats interesting Jacko. If Happy Wanderer was to drive to Cranbourne, Melb to check out that campervan, Happy Wanderer would have to use heaps of tollways.
Whenever we are dopey enough to use the Pacific Highway, the Sydney nightmare is considerably easier using the M7... well worth whatever they charge!!!
The New England Highway will have an other car on it this Christmas, going to Bris from Canberra and back. Its a bit further but much more civilised... and no tolls.
I believe you are right Beth . Especially IF you are Towing . Some of it not immediately , brake-wear , wear & tear on gears , clutch etc . Then every time you stop , the extra fuel to Restart . I did a test-run for a mate in a B-double several years ago from Melb - Bris . We both left BP & Pt Melb @ same time ,2 similar trucks , both @ 60 ton , old mate went Newell , I went Hume & Pacific . I did 5-6 decent climbs & over 100 longer - I had 7 stops & did it quicker - LEGALLY. Ok , so I was lucky & got 25 green lights , only 2 red ones . It is 16hrs drive Newell - 19hrs Hume-Pacific The computer in my truck showed Less fuel - more k's - less braking , less gear- changing , I could go on but I think you get the drift . The $s I saved in fuel alone covered All the tolls - old mate , did not do any tolls . Gerty , it is 15k longer via New England than Pacific for me , but 30minutes longer . BUT , I get to Enjoy th Drive , & less caravans to overtake , less trucks too .
Has a grey nomad I kept well away from toll roads I know they are quicker and less fuel , but what is there to see just boring motor ways we like to have nice old fashion scenery rest area not servo rest stops we all like different things and that what it all about we should just do our thing and be happy if someone wants to do it another way

That's true too. The M1 to the Gold Coast is now very boring and tiresome. Nothing much to see and 4 lanes of madness sometimes.
I guess it depends on your schedule etc.
If I'm in no hurry I like to use the old highway north through Glasshouse Mountains as it's a much nicer drive than through that boring pine forest.
But when I go up to my son's place near Ipswich, I use the Logan & Ipswich Motorways (with 2 tolls) as it's much quicker. Even accounting for the roadworks on the Ipswich Motorway.
Hey Beth , I thought the M1 was a Qld racetrack - especially hearing from the coppers - that it is called , The 300 Strip - There are at least 6 regular High speed cars race up then come back down @ over 300klicks ph . They say that they will soon start to catch them - in body bags . Their luck has to start running out.

Yep. They've made the road surface so good now, it's perfect for those young idiots.
A few years ago my son suggested a ride on his new motorbike. I was very reluctant, but he said just around the block. As you can guess, it was further than the block with the return along the M1. I was absolutely terrified, and sick by the time we returned home. Never never never again!
