We were at Sapphire in early October, stayed at the Blue Gem Park, it was quiet and clean, there is free camping in Emerald, under the bridge, but that was flooded out when we were there. We bought buckets of "dirt" from Moniques Mine in Rubyvale, and found several gems worth cutting, or you can go out into the fossickng fields and try your luck... We had to leave early as it rained every day we were there, and left before we were flooded in, even so we had a couple of exciting times driving thru water. Cheers Lyn
stayed at the c/park opposite the pub at Rubyvale for 5-6 days in March 09. Pretty average, in my opinion to say the least. Small sites and camp kitchen was a mess.
Site 332 in camps 5 (Saphire Reserve) is a day area, but seemed to be used by overnighters, however some turned up where we were to say they had been pelted by rocks during the night, by the 'locals' Maybe some work in Emerald but Saphire and Rubyvale would be to small. and many of those working their claims head south to escape the heat in the summer. Hope this helps.
Forgot to say, we enjoyed the gemfield area and will return one day.

Hi there, we stayed in Rubyvale for 3 weeks in June this year and had a great time. We stayed at the Rubyvale Caravan Park and it was nice. Clean amenities and friendly people. We dug for sapphires and also did the 'buckets'. Got a few to cut. Not sure about work around there though. Pretty small villages. May find something in Emerald depending on what you want to do. Good luck.
Hi Blonderer... We've been to the fields many times, and will be going back in March. Free camping anywhere on the fossicking fields. We normally camp up at "reward" fossick not far from camp and just love it. Work, I would think is very scarce. Ask the locals.. The best place for that is to go to the Tavern. People are very friendly out there. Cheers Dellie
