old fashioned camping toaster...

When I use to go camping with Mum and Dad as a child, they had a toaster that would sit on a gas ring. It looked abit like a 4 sided cheesegrater, but larger, with a curled base on each side for the bread to lie on. It was open up the centre, so the heat would transfer nicely and evenly.  It was a great gadget and browned the toast in no time. I have searched for this little item every time I see a camp shop or a secondhand shop, but still it eludes me.. Still searching.....

Camping stores have them too.  They're not hard to find.

Cheers,

Have bought one from a camping store, but didn't work as well as the old fashioned one Mum and Dad had, was designed differently.

Don't know why, but the Pic shows until I submit the Post then is not to be seen on the Page.   Anyhow, just Google Camping Toaster.  Just down from the top is a line of 4 different Pics.

I once gave an American a slice of toast and vegemite and asked him had he ever tasted anything like that before. He replied, "No but I think I've trodden in something like it!"

Happywanderer, I was born and lived in ChCh, the city that is shaking at present, still, before shifting to Oz. How long have u been here and have u travelled much of Oz?

Been here since 1997, came over after my husband passed away. Kids all here too.
Have travelled the east coast at least 8 times and lived in Brisbane for just under a year about 6 years ago. Rest of the time lived in Vic but grandkids up in Biggenden having moved there from Bundaberg. Last 3 years have spent the winter in Bundy with the grandkids for about 6 weeks each time.
Now want my own camper so I can see more up there each winter and not have such costly accommodation getting there both ways and be able to travel more afield.

We  have found this toaster does not work as well on pressured regulated{spelling}gas supply. Much better on gas ring on top of bottle.

         Interesting, thanku...
I do remember Mum and Dad used it on a very old fashioned Kersosene or meths stove, not sure which it was as a kid. Just the stove had an upside down purple liquid bottle feeding the flame. God reading that , it sounds very dangerous doesn't it...

This has been our experience as well.

We have tried the one pictured in Sheba's post and variations of the all metal Pyramid ones in the link provided by Capt Cream Bun, but keep coming back to good old single slice Gauze Camp Toaster.

Once that replaceable gauze gets that red glow, toasting takes no time at all.

I believe bush walkers pack that type of toaster and gas system blonderer. A small portable gas canister that can safely be used upside down or on its side which can be used for toasting or boiling water.Coleman make them.

We have the four slice model that fits on top of the Coleman gas thingy.  Also have the gas ring that fits on it too.  Great if you are going for a day long walk to make coffee along the way.  Very compact and fits into the backpack with minimal weight

i always use the one that you buy in k mart etc or any camp place has a long handle and has a square base that has a piece of square gauze that hooks over it can only cook one slice at a time but its great and i wouldnt change it ,you can buy the replacement gauze things to hook over the frame ,toasts in no time too. i love it
