Broome for the Wet

Hi everyone.  We finally made it across the top of Aussie and have now stopped in Broome for the Wet.  After needing new shocks, new tyres (after a blow out) and a bit of 'down time' we thought a stop in Broome to recoup would be a good idea.
We will stop here to see how we cope with the cyclone season and the humidity.  One of us has a job so that is a bonus!  If there is anyone else in Broome who would like to catch up for coffee or a 'drink', please let us know and we can meet up.  Thanks to those who gave us good advice when we first arrived in Brisbane in March - we appreciate that.  Good luck to all on the road and those travelling.  Regards Dan and Val

Aboutime, I don't want to be a wet blanket but they are forecasting a longer cyclone season in the West this year, I hope you are well prepared for some strong winds and plenty of high humidity.

Good to see you are out there living your dream.

Having worked in the Kimberley, the wet sure does arrive with a vengance. The days will get more humid until the first storms lash the district. It's like watching the country be reborn. The grass loses the dirty brown dusty cover to become a intense green, the Boab grow leaves. Everything takes a big breath, sit down time has arrived. Ahh the memories.

The build up and the wet are the best times in the Kimberley.
The Boabs flower now, the raintrees, moon trees, golden showers, poincianas all flower now, as well as other species. It's a spectacular time of the year. Then the rains come and it turns the "green" on. The countryside is absolutely magnificent from the first rains. With the rain comes the squalls, which can cause more damage than a cyclone if you're not prepared. The 30 minute prelude to a storm can be brutal, and the rain doesn't just fall out of the sky, it squirts out of the sky!
If you're tied down in Broome somewhere you will witness the biggest and loudest thunderstorms.
There are about 4 different types of thunderstorms which cross the Kimberley Region during the wet, right until the end of April.
You will need to be in a park where you can tie down with chains if a cyclone should come your way.
Vacation Village has chains in their slabs. I don't know what the other parks provide to do that.
Either way, if a cyclone should come, you will need to shelter somewhere other than your van.
Broome is an unlikely cyclone target, but if one hits, it's a noisy, horrendous experience.
Having work there is a bonus to keep up the travel funds.
Just crank up the aircon and the fan, sit back and enjoy this time of the year. You will remember it forever, as I do.
The Kimberley is my favourite region, as you can probably tell, for all those reasons and more.
