RE: PICK THIS PLACE

People do live there, and Trawlers lay up there in bad weather.  The area [ further north,] has a double-bunger name.

Thank you Sheba.

1998 we were there, back a couple a months ago I was looking at paper photographs of that awesome Cape York trip and thinking I might scan them and make a slide show. One day.

OK, Where are we today?

Somewhere near the "Black Stump"? Perhaps she became the black stump as a result of an accident?

Not that I know. She isn't a specific person, as I said it is a memorial to the pioneering women of a certain area.

Okay to pull this in. It is in Merriwagga. This memorial is next to the memorial of Mrs. Barbara Blain. In the area around Merriwagga you have the Black Stump Tank, the Black Stump Well and Swamp. The story of Mrs. Blain goes that her husband had left her to set up camp whilst he attended to the animals and whilst he was away Mrs. Blain's clothing caught on fire and she perished and her husband on returning thought her body looked like a black stump. The memorial pictured represents the hardships of pioneering times. Have not been there but will put it on my list for next we're down that way.
