how to keep expensive items safe in a camper-van

We are only 3 weeks away from starting the big trip all the way around Australia.
Doe's anyone have advice on how to keep valuables safe in a camper-van if you are away from it for a day?
It would be a little inconvenient to slide the beds in and wind down the roof every time we leave it for more than a couple of hours or if we are at the end of the jetty. We will be in situations like campsites/ camp areas and national parks. As much as we are fairly trusting we do appreciate thieves take holidays too.
Any advice gratefully excepted.

( free camp areas on the Eyre Peninsular would be helpful too)

My first thought would be to only take the valuables you are sure you will need. Any others leave with a relative or a bank safe.
Depending on what it is, maybe in a bag at the back of the fridge, somewhere tucked well out of site of looking through windows.

We had the same issue with our camper trailer. I wasnt possible to lock it securely at all. So we kept the lap-top, wallets etc in the Tug, out of sight of anybody looking in the windows. Never had a problem... people in campgrounds or caravan parks are usually respectful of other peoples property, it can occasionally be locals who cause problems.
Make copies of important documents, record the phone #'s to call for reporting lost/stolen cards etc, and consider bolting a "safe" or something onto the floor under the bed or in the back of a hard-to-get-at cupboard.

Havent been there yet, but Lincoln Nat Park was recommended to us by friends.

There aren't many free camping areas on Eyre Peninsula. The local councils and the other tourist operators don't encourage it.
The National Park charges a fee.
Sheringa west of Wangary, towards Elliston, is free adjacent to a very interesting and beautiful beach.
There are a few more but your best bet is to check out the Camps 5 traveller's guide which is the latest edition of most of Australia's free camps, some van parks, and good maps.
Newsagents have it, you can buy it online I believe, Angus and Robertson has it, retailing for up to $50, but it's worth every buck.

I'm heading that way around Christmas.

thanks, we bought a camps' five from the RAA and did a price check anywhere now sell the for about $70, we also bought a national park camping and park pass , good value for $48 for 2 months, so we thought we would buy 2 x 2 months as we will be heading down to the GOR in March anyway.

We have a Hawke and spent 7 weeks away in June/July. We never have a problem in van parks at all but we do the same as Gerty, keep a lot of stuff in the car out of view. The back seats in our hilux lift up so we can hide stuff in there as well.

I seen a van with a safe the other day while looking around for one to buy and they look like a not so bad idea. Not big enough for cameras and computers but excellent for excess money and documents for sure.

I will be getting a "safe" of some sort to bolt to the floor in the van.Now that most people carry expensive gear like laptops ,cameras and the like there is always a concern how to keep them safe when away from your van,camper etc.
Has anyone got a safe,if so where did you get it from and was it expensive?
