Vinyl Stone Protection Replacement

Want to DYI replace the vinyl stone protector  on the front of the van, Was considering the Marine Grade Carpet from BCF.  Thought it would suit the job as it's designed for  such exposure

Anyone got any suggestions other than alloy plate .

Having difficulty getting the original vinyl  unless having the job done by a repairer and giving up my first born child as a deposit

Hope this doesn't sound too silly, but have you tried a 'van Wreckers ?

Or, [don't laugh,as I've found some amazing things this way] have you Googled the Product appropriate for which-ever 'van you have ?

[ If I knew what make and Model 'van you have, I'd have done it myself already ].

Aluminium checker plate - not high gloss propeller plate is more than suitable. Use 1.6mm material and don't worry about the fact that it will show small sand blast chips from road gravel and it will weather down a little as time goes by - but it won't leak and cause the front frame of the van to disintegrate.

A great many of the vinyl clad vans that we have to strip down for one reason or the other will have had some degree of water ingress around the edges of the vinyl. Most of the material used is cloth based and the water wicks along the fabric and under the usually poorly sealed edges causing rot damaged to meranti and pine framed vans.

If the checker plate shows it has been used then that means that it has done its job and that you have been using the van - it does not detract from the overall value of the product.

We have had it on our vans and we swear by it. All but one which had vinyl, and after we had to drive over some newly poured tar on the rode, we had holes all over the vinyl, and it had to be replaced. Never again!!!!

Mate,

Have you looked at Spotlight, they sell what we used to call herculite in various thicknessess and weights and they also have a vynil that is foam backed...

Other than that have a chat to your local auto trimmer or ute toneau maker/fitter, they should be ablle to help you out....

Thanks Peter.  I'm a little dissapointed with Camec  I checked their Cattle dog and sent them an email through their "Contact Us" page to check price and availabiliity , that was over 7days back and have heard nothing back .  I hold out hope they will reply shortly, Thank Christ I'm not in a hurry.  There are more and more suppliers  who have adopted the  It's all to hard to answer policy

What about a rubber product such as they use for ute linine etc.
My vinyl went dry and brittle but with heaps of baby oil and Armorall it's come back, but it did shrink on the boot lid.
It has heaps of stone chips and marks, so I was wondering about a rubber product.
I might check out Clark Rubber and similar.

The marine carpet suggested above may be worth thinking seriously about**. I have found that good quality marine carpet drains and dries remarkably quickly after being soaked and does not develop mould. My former next door neighbour (sadly now deceased) used to remove his vinyl stone guard when storing his van.

A stone guard fitted to the rear of the tug would reduce the likelihood of a stone hitting the front of the van and bouncing into the rear window of the tug. (I've had this happen - very expensive!cry)

(** I wonder if the forum's resident pedant will chastise me for ending a sentence with a preposition????confuseconfuse)

Chris don't you remember your high school grammar (no not grandma or gramma).....

You should never use a preposition to end a sentence with.

And you should never start a sentence with a conjunction.

And you should always take care to never split an infinitive!!!!

Finally I tracked down someone at CAMEC as Peter D suggested who was a great help It turns out that the product is a discontinued line but as luck had it they still had some in stock at a greatly reduced price so I ordered it and now comes the business end when it gets here . If it fails then Marine Carpet is my next attempt .
