Australia's original 'crocodile hunter', environmentalist and wildlife documentary maker Malcolm Douglas has been killed in a car crash in Western Australia's Kimberley.

He died after he lost control of the car he was driving and hit a tree on the premises of his Wilderness Park, 16 kilometres north of Broome.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The Wilderness Park has been closed until further notice.

Mr Douglas was a great promoter of the Kimberley and had developed two parks near Broome.

The Crocodile Park, close to Cable Beach, was set up in 1983 as a research centre and contained crocodiles that had been caught and relocated to the park, for causing disturbance to outback communities.

Mr Douglas created his Wilderness Park on 30 hectares and operated it as an animal refuge with cassowaries, dingoes, kangaroos, birds and hundreds of crocodiles.

He started making wildlife films to showcase his passion for the environment and conservation in 1964.

He was 69 years old.....
